Really. Competing with Israel for a security council seat is akin to emboldening Nazis. Not even the radical left wingers make this kind of point.

Also, Merkel personally didn't position anyone as anything. She tried another constellation, it didn't work out, she was not the one blowing the talks up. Going with the socialists was raison d'état. There was nothing else that could be done.
