Federal election law specifically forbids foreign governments and foreign political parties, corporations, associations, and individuals from contributing, donating, or spending funds in connection with any local, state, or federal election in the United States. The prohibition includes either direct or indirect contributions. In addition, it is unlawful to assist foreign nationals in violating the ban or to solicit, receive, or accept contribution or donations from them.
