I go on our school Washington DC trip every year as a chaperone. If those had been my kids, I would have gotten between them and the NA and moved the kids farther up the stairs and away from him. If the NA had followed them, I would then have blocked his path and kept him from the kids.
If someone would then paint me as infringing on his (the NA) right to proceed, I would make one statement outlining my duty to protect my kids first and then took whatever the media wanted to dish out with no further comment or apology. The news cycle is so fast, and Americans have such a short attention span that it would be over in a few days to a week.
