There was no "hoax" from the beginning.

It began with allegations that Russians interfered with our election which Trump called "fake news". He was proven 100% wrong.

Then there were allegations of secret meeting with Russian operative which Trump and his family lied their asses off about but were proven to be true.

At that point it would have been ridiculous NOT to investigate.  The grounds for the investigation were 100% legit.
