That is the main premise, but it goes so much deeper than that. TBH I only read it after getting into an argument with a friend about the validity of the authors claims. I essentially believed it had to be a pseudo-history conspiracy tale.
Upon seeing the meticulousness of the authors referencing system of each and every claim made, my opinion quickly changed and I read the text in full. I've never seen a work made for public consumption so well referenced. If I recall correctly, my paperback version was something like 500 pages; ~200 of those had to be the supporting documents.
