from what I read, these guests were chosen by the Vatican ambassador to the US. The only person with a private meeting was a former student of the Pope.
Either way, I hope people realize that this Pope isn't some liberal reformer nor is he some stalwart of conservatism. Catholicism doesn't fit into one side of the US political spectrum. Francis just doesn't come off as sith lord like as Benedict. He still has the same beliefs.
