Weaving together racists and Baptists in order to push pro-business legislation was a horrible idea. The media — especially the rise of social media — has made the voting habits pretty clear. The majority of lawmakers vote with their campaign supporters in mind, but it's harder for GOP faithful to keep blindly following that. They've seen too many years where the GOP said 'elect us and we will X.' They got elected and just passed tax cuts.
