I am all for forgiveness. But I find these kinds of comments for an elected official to be hollow. "not what is in my heart" translates, to me, to "I think this but I don't want people to know that I'll pretend I'm dumb enough to say racist things but I'm not really racist."
Again that's just my take on overtly racist statements.
