Any moves in the direction we fear will only exacerbate things as it forces more moderate people to take a stand one way or another. I fear dark times are ahead.
The government has been tracking the extremist groups for years and been warning about them. Because the warnings weren't taken seriously, and because of leadership dropping the ball, people died live on television in the Capitol. That event will be used to justify broadening surveillance of the citizenry and restricting freedoms with less due process. I would put money on it. And people that otherwise seem reasonable will just let it happen.
