I am a foreigner, and as such I have to say that protests turning into riots, while not to be taken lightly for sure, do occur... but what happened at the Capitol was unique and outright spooky. A mob wandering through the halls, calling for Nancy like in a horror movie, breaking into offices, violently altercating with police forces resulting in deaths, and last not least erecting gallows to hang Mike Pence, all those and lots of other frightening scenes are pretty unseen in western democracies and imho more than justify the term insurrection. That it had little chance to succeed does not change that impression. Thaat they did not find any of their targets was luck and a pretty close call.

If scenes like this had happened in my country, I'd still be shaking. On the grounds alone that they are unthinkable.
