Yep but that would also limit who they can sign in free agency as well. If the intent of the front office is not to keep Bates long term then the best solution is to trade him right now.
The problem with trading him right now though is that other teams can't negotiate a longterm contract with him either. So whoever trades for him will be getting him on a short term rental.
