Ah, the Tarheels, thanks Truck.

I just remember Lampkin being in blue and being towered over by his fellow OL.

I've googled it like 4 times now.

Also saw him as very inconsistent. He really liked Rivers and thought he'd make a great guard. Somewhat disconcerting. But Cosell is just a film guy after all. Both situations make me uneasy. I. My mind guard was o e of the top 2goals in the off-season and I'm not satisfied that they got the job done.
I think people on the bengals board have more smarts than most retired players and sportswriters

Solid would be a huge step up from previous years.
But for anyone to basically bet on a mid-round pick being solid-or-better starter Year 1, more often than not they'll lose that bet.
It's (very) rare for mid-round picks to do great out of the gate.
Much more often they either serve as a rotational/depth piece in first 1-2 years or at least have some struggles early on in their first 1-2 years as they acclimate to the NFL.
I pernally would have rather seen one more OG veteran added on a 1-year or 2-year deal to not have to bank so much on Fairchild being good out of the gate, but it is what it is at this
but as you stated we don't need great, last few years have seen more mid round picks it seems cracking the starting lineup... again don;t need great just solid or better than what we had last year
Fairchild was PFF All American rather than AP All American.
LEFT GUARD: DYLAN FAIRCHILD, GEORGIA BULLDOGS
Fairchild has powered college football's best interior offensive line. He was the only left guard in America to post top-15 grades both as a pass protector and a run blocker. On 466 pass-blocking snaps, Fairchild surrendered only three combined sacks and hits.
2018's what could have been if he had only lasted 1 more spot, Lions C Frank Ragnow announced his retirement today. The Bengals picked C Billy Price 1 spot later

Yeah, I like this guy for our future LG for sure.

Have a great retirement Frank, had a great career, thought he would of stuck around longer than this though, injury?

nothing specific just wear and tear taking its toll
The Lions lost both Ragnow and Zeitler and their OL probably still won’t miss a beat. Must be nice.

Ah, okay, thanks Pally. Wanted us to draft Frank back in the day, dang Lions.

We will see, they still have that great OL coach correct? I think they will definitely miss Ragnow, he was one of the best Centers in the NFL.

Or if the Bengals didn't trade down in a pick swap with the Bills in order to get Cordy Glenn. We originally had the 12th pick. The Bills used it to trade up again for Josh Allen, and the Bucs got the pick and took Vita Vea. We ended up with Cordy Glenn and Billy Price.

Yes, but a high majority of draft picks, especially after the first two rounds don't even perform "solid" as rookies.
Most never earn starting gigs as rookies, and many that do have up and down performances.
I am optimistic of Fairchild, I mocked him to Bengals at different times in the offseason leading up to the draft.
My worry is even with that optimism, there's always a risk that a mid-round rookie (or any rookie) is not going to be consistently good/solid enough right out of the gate.
Could he beat out the likes of Patrick, Ford, and Volson? Maybe.
And it sounds like they are giving him the opportunity to do so.
However, beating out (arguably) scrubs doesn't mean the rookie will perform consistently solid or better right out of the gate.
In a preferred world, a quality vet would have been added to cover the position as insurance in case the draft pick isn't ready or has inconsistent/poor performance early on.
Whoever covers LG and RG, I hope they both perform at least solid or better, I don't really care who it is.
And on the flip side, I'll be critical of whoever covers those spots if they perform poorly.
The goal for the season on a contender is to have solid or better performance regardless of whether vet or rookie, allowing those who need more development to ride the bench as needed.

Shouldn't the Lions fans be screaming we are doomed? Guess who is taking snaps at #1, Rutledge. He may be great, but some of our fans would be throwing a hissy fit and trashing the FO for not addressing it in FA as t hey knew his plans.

Ratledge is who many of us wanted in the 2nd round. And with Detroit taking him you can almost guarantee he’ll end up being good. They know how to draft OL.

Hopefully, he won't be good until after week 5. Switching from guard to center is a huge learning curve. For a rookie to do it and start is a big jump. He will struggle in the beginning.
