Limited production and high demand, and they charge a mint for it. Read just about any review and it doesn't really stand out from other bourbons.

I used to buy Pappy 20 off the shelve any day of the week for $110.00 and could readily get the 23-year-old for $250.00. The 20 is better than the 23, but none of it is worth the ridiculous prices they cost now. We're talking 1000s per bottle, and it's nothing now but a status symbol. There are plenty of $50.00 dollar bourbons out there that are better. Buffalo Trace is just excellent at marketing and product placement. Their "Blanton's" became scarce after they started featuring it on "Justified." The bourbon boards out there that are populated by bourbon enthusiasts call those chasing these bottles and paying exorbitant prices for them "taters." I work right down the street from the distillery and you should see the idiots standing in line for hours in the cold and rain to buy a bottle of Blanton's, Eagle Rare or Col. Taylor at msrp from the gift shop. They had to limit people to one of each every three months and these taters still stand in line to buy it. I drive by and laugh, and run into Kroger's and buy a bottle of Michters....

Eagle Rare and EHT are damn good bottles of bourbon especially for the price tag. I can't wait for the days when I can go to the store and just buy one off these off the shelves. With BTs increased production, I feel like those times are close. 

So many good options out there, though. I'd rather have a pour of OF 1920 or KC 12 than Blantons. So much better.

I learned very early bourbon and my ability to handle it were in direct conflict. Maybe it was I could not stop at 2 drinks.

I of course don't drink, but my father has been rated (by the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society) in the 98th percentile (in the world) for palette, in terms of detecting flavours, aromas, bouquets, etc.

He's maintained forever that Bourbon is straight, harsh gut rot and only Americans like it lol. 

From my own smell, it is absolutely nasty-smelling, not refined or, "polished," like a single malt scotch or even a grappa, but people will like what they like, I guess...

I don't drink it 99.5% of the time. If i'm out with friends partying it up, i'll have a shot or two. Back in the day when i played CoD on the gaming PC i built, on Friday nights i would drink 2 little shot sized drinks of fireball and 2 beers to get that quick buzz going then i'd play all night long. Kind of a wind down from a week of work. 

Mostly though, i like fruity liquor drinks. I can drink those till the sun comes up, on almost any occasion. 

And congrats to your father for such an honor!

When he first started in the wine business in 2003, he always enjoyed single malts, but didn't really pursue them research and drinking-wise like he did with wines. When his company also imported the whisky however, he had to read up and when he finally drank a good quality Macallan, he was hooked.

Thus, he started going to all these tasting, then got that certification and he can undoubtedly say that it is his favourite spirit. When I went to Scotland on rugby tour, the first house we stayed with, the mom gave me a bottle of Oban, when I went to Japan, I got him a Yamazaki 15 (or was it an 18? can't remember, it was for his 60th bday) and for his 55th or 56th bday, I got him a Macallan that was a hefty price. He isn't a snob per se, but he appreciated all three to death and could see the marked difference between those three and say, an off the shelf cheap blend or a Johnie Walker.

It's one of his feathers in his cap indeed lol, I believe I have a similar or virtually identical palate to him however, as I can taste what he does in certain foods and can pick out scents as well (or better than he can).

I smell so many things my wife can't smell, for example.

Old Forester has multiple different excellent bourbons in their line-up.

It all comes down to what you like. I have tried and tried over the years to develop a taste for Scotch, but I just do not like it. Now a good bourbon (not the cheap stuff) like pretty much anything from Buffalo Trace, Michters, Old Forester and Noah's Mill are just excellent on the rocks. Anything like Makers, Wild Turkey, Jim Beam etc., I have to put some Coke or 7 Up in it.

Lol I can pick the smell of mould out anywhere, like that (snaps fingers), when so many people are, "I don't smell anything!" It's such a nasty, irritating smell.

Freschin as well, pick it up anywhere.

Food wise, my wife can't pick out veggies for some reason (green, leafy vegetables), but root vegetables she can sniff out like nothing.

It's amazing what our noses/tastebuds can detect and do.
