Evan Mathis only had 22 starts in his first six years in the league and ended up being all pro Super Bowl champ pro bowler after becoming a quality starter around the age of 30.

Well Patrick had 39 starts his first six years.

Hoping for an Evan Mathis type career trajectory here.

The difference is that I remember when Evan was on the team, and most of us wanted him to start.

He is talking about Volson.

Not getting a surefire starter at Guard is the biggest offseason fail. A mid-round pick + the Poo Poo platter at one spot would have been tolerable, but this is crap. Even if we hit on Fairchild immediately (big if) RG is still shaky.

Having said that, Patrick + Fairchild should be a slight upgrade. But considering Cappa/Volson was likely the worst G duo in the league, that ain't saying much.

No he wasn’t. Volson has started way more than 30 games over the last 3 years. His response was to me calling Patrick a career backup.
Maybe they should have just cut Volson instead of reworking his contract. They would have saved 3M to the cap instead of 490K.

I though Fairchild is playing RG reuniting him with Mims, and Peters is penciled in at Left?

Volson is depth...

Pretty sure Ratledge (the Georgia guard we should have drafted) played RG next to Mims in college. Fairchild was LG.

Also, Peters is the OL coach. LOL

I meant Patrick... Ninja

I remember Mathis talking about the Eagles scheme and offensive line coach fitting him better.

Here we used a passive blocking scheme. There they had the lineman attack the defenders. He called himself a caveman and said it fit him better.

I'd venture the Bengals don't know who the starters are at this point at Guard...and it wouldn't shock me if Ford ends up starting there.

Not saying I like it, but I think that's the state we're in.

It's hard to pencil a 3rd Round pick in as an upgrade Year 1. We have no clue how he'll play.
