Hopkins is a great pass blocker. A lot of room for improvement as a run blocker though, and at this point in his career, he probably is who he is.
So he's a "C" if I were grading him.
The guards are the biggest concern.
With that said, I do like Carman, especially at OG. I think it may fit his play style and help hide his deficiencies with speed rushers.
I'd like to think Spain will be better after a full offseason compared to coming into a brand new scheme midseason.
I think/hope there will be a competition for the starting OG spots between Spain, XSF, and Carman.
Carman and Spain/XFS is going to be a world of difference from Jordan and Redmond.

I haven't heard anything regarding the knee, but of course it's possible. It's also very possible it's over money and/or opportunity to start. If we bring him in and are able to sign him for a bargain then good for us, but it would have to be an agreeable amount for him, and he likely wants to make much more than the 3m he made previously as a starting center.

I would agree they will be a difference but we also have to be honest about performance from last year.. Spain played more snaps than Redmond and did not perform up to his signing. XFS only played 27% of snaps last year with a injury and also performed below expectations. Carman has never played in the NFL so jury is still out on him.
So yes a upgrade but a world of difference is questionable with both Spain/XFS coming off so so performances plus banking on a rookie who has yet to take a snap yet.

Zim posted it on Twitter; can't quote it now, but paraphrasing, he said, "Agent said knee isn't 100%, but other teams are interested. Could be (Cap emoticon) by his agent though."
The, "Cap," for those wondering, means he's lying lol

Jesus Christ... the guy played an entire game, sans 1 series, *2* days after he was signed and THEN played RT for 2 games, when he's never taken a snap at T before (from what I could find, may be wrong on that). And he STILL was beyond-serviceable, even if he wasn't spectacular at all.
If you expect someone to be all-world coming into that sitch, in addition to the crappy oline we fielded, I don't know if that's just ignorance, hate or pure-trolling.

There was also a couple games Spain started the game at Right Guard and finished the game at Left Guard...

Spain did very well last year ESPECIALLY coming in literally right off of signing with no practice snaps at all and also being shuffled around the line. Once we had Spain and XSF at Guards the interior line issues abruptly ceased - no more jailbreaks and free running defenders and such.

Indeed. I’d be willing to bet a lot of teams feel like they don’t have adequate ot depth. The ol isn’t great, I think we’d all agree on that. I don’t think it will be the unmitigated disaster it has been recently. Hart and Redmond gone. Price and Jordan possibly too. At least not counted on to start. That’s got to be an improvement right there.
It’s going to be a long season around here if after every sack or non positive running play we have to read about how we should have drafted Sewell

Well he was cut by Bill's after being benched last year . I'm not sure by pointing g out he did not perform to expectations which by the way he mentioned he was disappointed in his performance last year is ignorance or hate, I see it as a honest observation and hope for better results.

Well he is off to visit the Texans. It'll be interesting to see if they sign him (and for how much).

Did context sleep with your wife at some point? Is that why you hate it so much?

What "context" am I missing?
What "context" explains why a guy can play "very well", yet only get signed to the lowest scrub level contract?

I would look for the OL to improve with Spain playing. I will take him over Jordan or Redmond 100 out of 100 times.
That said, Fred is right. There's a good reason why he just signed for the league minimum. And there's also a good reason the Bills had to eat his signing bonus, and basically paid him to go away mid-season. Quenton Spain just isn't that good, or certainly hasn't been anything close as of late.
Is Quenton Spain a better option than Michael Jordan, and will the OL most likley be better as a result? Yes, and yes. Is Quenton Spain a less than ideal starter? Also yes. All of these things can be true. And it shouldn't make you a homer to say yes to the first series of questions, and it shouldn't make you a hater to say yes to other question either.
Here's how I personally see him: Our best case scenario is he returns to form and is somewhere around an average to slighly below average starter. The expected scenario is he's a well below average starter, but is still an improvement. And our worst case scenario is among the league's worst, and the position continues to really hurt this team.
I can see thinking he's better than what he had; I can also still being extremely worried about the position. Just my 2 cents.

I thought league minimum was less than 700K and you said he signed for 1.1 million. When was he signed? Did he get 1.1 million for hos contract in Cincy (less than 16 games and preseason games)?
My point is accurate fax matters and 700K is not close to 1.1 million in my opinion. I am using your numbers for him.
2024 may go on record as one of most underperforming teams in Bengal history. Bengal's FO has major work to do on defensive side of the ball. I say tag and trade Tee Higgins in 2025 to start with the rebuild.

So, I guess we can consider you part of the faction that believes that the Bengals didn't do near enough in free agency or the draft to fortify the OL?
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

He's visiting the Texans. Should be interesting to see if he signs there. If not, maybe the knee really is the issue. If he signs, I'd throw that excuse out though.

We also have no idea how good Sewell is going to be right out of the gate. The idea that a 20 year from the Pac 12, who has a year of rust is a guarantee to immediately fix anything is purely speculative and probably wishful thinking. I would not at all be surprised if Reiff has a better year than Sewell in 2021. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it's likely to happen.
Not a top 10 unit, but passable, and even a plus group. Especially if we'd drafted Terrance Marshall in round 2. The WR that actually played last year. (The one we got should have the same hypothetical rust as Sewell)
Imo, we should've drafted Sewell and gone after Reiter and probably another player. Throw in Carman, and we could've been a strong unit this year. As it stands, I'm fully expecting to be rubbing some noses in poor line play this year.
Keeping it a full 100, people wanted Chase, and minimized the need on o-line to justify it. I'm fine w/ people having their own opinions and wanting to pair Chase with Burrow. I get it. What I don't get is downplaying the glaring need on the line that was barely addressed yet again. People need to be honest. Carman and a 1 year rental of a pretty average Tackle wasnt enough.
The training, nutrition, medicine, fitness, playbooks and rules evolve. The athlete does not.

What I don't understand is claiming that hiring an new O-line coach, signing the tenth highest paid RT in the league in free agency, and drafting a potential starter with the 38th pick in the draft is "barely addressing" the problem.
People need to be honest.
