McNamara, the great UDFA punting hope, from the off season, didn't even make it to the first preseason game.  Late signee Ryan Rehkow knocked him out o the competition

*Signed DE Andre Carter. Carter (6-5, 270), a rookie out of Indiana University, originally signed with Jacksonville as a free agent in May. He was waived by the Jaguars on July 31.

*Signed DT Joshua Pryor. Pryor (6-4, 280), a second-year player out of Bowie State University, originally was a college free agent signee of Washington in 2023. He played in seven games as a rookie for the Commanders and recorded one special teams tackle. He was waived by Washington on May 7.

That is a surprise. Jungle Noise had a whole thread filled with excitement about the signing, including his highlights and stats and how he might have been the best punter in the draft, although not drafted. I guess Ryan Rehkow was more impressive as a punter, or maybe McNamara couldn't do well with holding for McPherson.

I sware I just saw something posted about McPherson liking it tilted a certain way, funny timing so yeah that's my guess too unless he just didn't show accuracy as he has the leg.

media has mentioned that Robbins has shown a lot o improvement.  And raved about the new guy booming it.  Not a peep about McNamera

I don't think I ever looked up Rehkow in the draft process.
He did have a really damn good YPP though in college career - 47.4.
He had two seasons with >48 YPP - 48.6 in 2021 and 48.4 last year.

NFL.com said this about his college punting:

My only thought why McNamara was let go in favor of Robbins/Rekhow was either:
- McNamara wasn't able to demonstrate enough touch/hangtime to go along with his big leg, and/or...
- Robbins really has found a way to improve his distance, which was a huge struggle for him last year. (We did see a fluff piece about that this offseason - https://www.bengals.com/news/brad-robbins-change-long-range-mindset)
- Rekhow was able to show better distance/hangtime/placement over McNamara


Regardless, I hope whoever wins the job does way better than 2023 Robbins

Penn State I think it was had a kicker or punter that may have always been the biggest guy in the field.

There are landmine victims in Sierra Leone who I’d trust to kick a ball higher and further than Robbins.

Yes, big surprise us waiving McNamara. Must be like you said, he cannot hold the way McPherson likes it.

Oh well, hope Rehkow can be a damn good Punter/Holder for us or Robbins can improve a ton.

It doesn’t bother me that he is already cut, as they would not have brought in a third punter if they thought he could win the job. Nor is cutting him now ian endorsement of Robbin’s, just acceptance that it was a waste of a roster spot when we needed to bring in DL depth.

Were you great your first year in your career job?

Amazing thing, people do get better. Just watch the Olympics and see people who did not medal in Tokyo, are winning gold and other medals. Most rookies do not peak after year one either in sports or in a profession.

I was obviously adequate at my job in the first year or they would have brought somebody in to replace/challenge for my position.

Also Robbins unlike me walking in to a job on day one had years and thousands and thousands of hours training and opportunities to hone his craft.

The Olympics are every 4 years would you be happy with Robbins and his banana feet kicking it here, there and everywhere for the next couple of years in the hope he peaks in his 4th year?

I have no problem with competition but just like a job , you have to win the interview to get the job, so Robbins was a very accomplished college punter, 3x Big Ten, Mich punting record, semi finalist for Ray Guy award so no issue drafting him, he underperformed as a rookie but so have other rookies in past that got better in year 2.  I have read positive reports of Robbins having a good camp so we will see if that improvement holds and  wins the job.

Rehkow was ranked higher than McNamara in the punter rankings on most site. They were never going to keep 3 punters especially with injuries piling up. Robbins still isn't safe and Simmons was lucky enough to have two top punters in College football to get a good look at.

Rehkow looks like he won the shot to unseat Robbins and we are still in a good spot to see the punting improve.

Rehkow beats baby Mac, as they were both long boomers, they gave baby Mac a chance to move on else where, with the focus on making our team better, now the competition begins, give me a good punter. best wishes to baby mac.

I don;t see it as a done deal yet, the two scrimmages i went to , i thought Robbins looked better but Rehkow does have a stronger leg it looks like, (though his college stats are added by punting in Utah, probably a 5 to 7 yard split between home and away) his delivery seemed a bit slow, preseason games might be the decided but no one has it locked up
