***Pre-Season GameDay Thread - Colts @ Bengals***
(08-22-2024, 11:49 PM)Housh Wrote: My question after this preseason run is how do you give Burton minutes and actually get him open

The only thing on tape for Burton right now is to not leave him 1 on 1 VS CB3/CB4’s. I guess you can put him on Tee’s side in 3WR sets and guaruntee that safety doesn’t cheat to Chase but I’d damn near put my CB2 on him whenever he enters the game even if Tee is out there too cause if i was a DC my only goal would be to not let Burton get a 1v1 VS a lesser corner

I made this point before and I will make it again since last nights game showed the same thing.  If you watch Burton's TD last night, it was another outside down the sideline route.  All of his big plays have been the same route.  He isnt showing a diversity of route running.  He has basically been a one trick pony.  That may work in preseason against 3rd and 4th stringers but he has to show more than that in regular season.  There is a reason Burton is down in the depth chart and Taylor is putting him in the games so late.  If I had to guess I would think Burton isnt grasping the playbook and his routes like Taylor expects him to.

Mims. Love him so far but he's a question mark for a full 17 game season.
Burton. Love him so far but he's a question mark with the attitude.
All. Love him so far but he's coming off an ACL and spinal surgery the year before.

Those are the top 3 that are expected to contribute immediately and they all have significant question marks.

Lee, Newton, Jackson, Njongmeta. All guys down the depth chart that "show promise". That does nothing for us right now.

I get that you (and many others) are still able to ramp up the enthusiasm year after year, but i lost that in '21. I've seen too many seasons end in disappointment, no playoffs, playoff loss, super bowl loss. I've seen too much 'what if', too many injuries at the worst time and injuries that affected a promising QBs career.

We're facing that with Burrow now. Two season ending injuries in 4 years and massive question marks with his wrist this year. Can't sign Jesse Bates, lose him, turn around and can't sign Tee Higgins and will probably lose him and now they're ***** around with Chase. Let's see how that works out.

As soon as they win the SB, i'll come back around to being super positive and optimistic. Until then, i have nothing but skepticism.

I disagree that the selection of Ali and Burton were expected to contribute greatly, if you are saying the 3rd/4th TE and 5th/6th WR are then we are in for a long season. Mims was drafted as a buffer with Brown, so he is not even the starter but has a chance at reps  this year.

Those two words are not the same.

on the offense: I saw the preaseason games, the more they progress, the less confidence they give me, this is for our 2-3 tier players...I dont know if our new OC is the reason, but I have not seen anything that looks promising as a team other than some individual offensive players.

You can slice and dice, cuss and discuss, argue and agree about the preseason. This I think I know. 4-5 returning OL a year under their belt together and adding Trent Brown and Mims strengthens them. Gesicki is a bigger threat in the Redzone and for big gains. Chase Brown is definitely an explosive player. Isovias and Burton more receiver mismatches than Tyler. His experience though will be missed. Tee is coming off his best camp as is Joe. This offense is better than anytime the last 3 years IMO. The defense is much better at safety. This doom and gloom I get it based on preseason. We don’t know the coaches mindset on their preseason goals. Make no mistake Zac Taylor May be the most guarded coach in preseason as far as protecting his players. It has resulted in some slow starts but they’ve also had strong second half seasons.

I’ve got 1 sentence. The OL will determine how far this team goes and of course health.
Romo “ so impressed with Zac ...1 of the best in the NFL… they are just fundamentally sound. Taylor the best winning % in the Playoffs of current coaches. Joe Burrow” Zac is the best head coach in the NFL & that gives me a lot of confidence." Taylor led the Bengals to their first playoff win since 1990, ending the longest active drought in the four major North American sports, en and appeared in Super Bowl LVI, the first since 1988.

Burton has caught passes on the following routes:
Quick out
Slant
Post
Back shoulder
Double move
Go route

The guy is a solid route runner, I too think it is a playbook issue.

I read this thread before I got to watch the replay. I expected such a lousy performance.

Holy shit some of yall have some ridiculous expectations for a preseason game where our second and third string played against their starters.

I was happy as hell our backups went in to half time tied with the Colts starters. And with only two minutes left in the game if we could have got the ball back we still had a chance to win.

Totally exceeded my expectations.

I agree. If anything, the Bears and Colts should be concerned about their 1st team offenses.

I am not sure how you can gauge their play with the entire 2nd or 3rd team on the field. Coaches are looking at individual play by then. They will be alright if they get sprinkled in with vets, who can make sure they are lined up right and know where to be.

I think you are underestimating Burton's route running. Your assumption is based on his reps with a backup OL. Also, a backup QB and it seemed Zac kept the offense vanilla by design. You may be correct, but I want to see Burton running routes with the 1st team. Separation is tough in the NFL, but Burton seems to have the speed and quickness to get separation.

I am so ready for 2024 season. I love pro football and hoping for a great Bengals year. Regardless, always remember it is a game and entertainment.

Burton doesn’t get out of Bama w/o solid route running. He doesn’t get drafted by us if he doesn’t run solid routes. The Bengals have really made a ton of changes to their offense. Yes they aren’t showing it. They are looking to be more explosive. They are grooming Chase Brown with explosive play chances. They are going to stretch the middle of the field with Gesicki. Zac was excited as heck when they drafted Burton. They’ve got big plans. They want to spring him I’d bet on KC. They have also vastly improved their passing in the redzone and with Tee, Yoshi, and Gesicki there’s a lot of matchup problems for teams. It’s also going to be a problem on third 5.

Really loving the emergence of Jaxson Kirkland. No surprise Jordan Battle was a stud against those Colts backups.

Nothing against Vonn Bell but we need to make sure we give Battle snaps, he shouldn't be benched after just playing like the
best young Strong Safety in the NFL last year.

Ok I would disagree with immediately also, neither of those two  were drafted to contribute  immediately and even Mims was drafted after we acquired Brown so he was projected as a backup.

I did have a question on Burrows injury. During the game they mention his injury and the operation. They said he had screws put in place for x amount of months then they were removed.

So does this mean the ligament was intact and that the bone broke off? If so that seems like a better outcome as I've heard people saying the ligament itself could degenerate if it was repaired.

Kirkland playing well, could push Ford off the 53, hopefully.

Contribute immediately and start immediately aren't the same thing.

Ford is likely safe, he isnt good at OT, but is our OG3.

IIRC, that is exactly what happened and why people were all worried about it: the ligament snapped off and took bone shards with it.
