Week 1 opponent-Patriots
#1
Patriots probable starting QB Jacoby Brissette hurt his throwing shoulder tonite after a sack.

This means there is a real possibilty that rookie Drake Maye is the starter against us.

Ordinarily, that would be great news …but we make Rookies look like Tom Brady.

, Patriots are a bottom tier team would be a major blow early losing at home to them

I agree. Don't want to put too much stock into week 1 but we really should/need to win that one especially with KC in week 2. Man it will be here before we know. I'm excited.

Outside of White, the Bengals defense has been pretty solid against rookie QBs since 2021. Our loses are mostly on Burrow and the offense playing really poorly. I guess you could consider Stroud last year but the #1 pick 10 games in should be decent and we still held him to under 60% completion percentage.

I was listening to a podcast today where they were talking about "Survivor League" and the safest pick of week one. The consensus was Bengals over Pats.

Lous defense and the Pats OL is going to make life miserable for Maye.

I'm sure Lou can confuse Maye, hopefully we do well during the off script moments that will surely occur.

We don't.

I did a LONG ASS post 2 or 3 years ago that debunked this.

And we lost 8/9 games in a 3 year span because we were one of the worst teams in the league those 3 years, but this is from 2021:

Maye can run, I don't have 100% confidence in Lou until I see it again this year. Last year was not good and I know we had personnel issues.

Patriots OL committed 10 penalties last night. At least 3 were on the starting line. The LT lined up in the backfield so often that on the flag announcement sai “illegal formation…yet again”. The starting LG sprained his ankle. If he can’t go his back up is a blast from our past, Michael Jordan. Even Patriot reporters are saying the main reason not to start Drake Maye is his offensive line.

Of course, with Bengals luck means they will perform flawlessly

Chuks Okorafor had 3 just himself but I believe one was declined. He was trying to pull a Jawaan Taylor and lineup in the backfield and got hit with 3 illegal formation penalties one taking a TD off the board.

I wonder if the Refs will be emphasizing thr depth of the OT at the snap this year.

I expect our defense to be MUCH better this year for 2 major reasons:
1) Better safety play
2) Our offense will be better leading to more rest for the defense as well as having more leads

There are obviously more reasons (Rankins providing more of a pass rush from the defensive interior than we've had, for example) but I think these are the 2 that'll see our defense look leagues better than it did last year.

I think that train of thought happened when we lost against Houston in the playoffs against a rookie

Defending Patriots offense was never in questions regardless who starts at QB.

The issue is can the oline block the very formidable Patriot dline. Even with their missing pieces (trades, medical), they have the players to dominate.

Historically, week one games tend to see more upsets compared to the rest of the regular season mostly due to limited tape on new opponents. Even though the Bengals are favored, I would still expect a close game regardless if it's Brissett or Maye starting.

With the state of the Patriots, and our struggles in division, this isn't a must win, but its a tone setter early on for sure.
Need to see us establish and stick with the run, limit big plays on defense, and Joe come out with a sense of urgency.

Get a lead early and neutralize the pass rush. Fast start is key.

To your 2nd point, seemed a bit muted.. last three years in time of possession ranking  2021- 12th, 2022- 3rd  2023- 12th...so we still above half the teams and on edge of top 10 in 21 and last year.  I think it is lack of stopping the run and 3rd down conversions by our defense that hurt us.. now will have to fact check myself..lol

Drake Maye looked good too, was kind of hoping Brissette would be the guy we play against and heard the injury wasn't terrible so it still
might be him. We have played against Brissette pretty sure and he shouldn't surprise us as much as a talented young QB like Maye could.
