We are looking at worst case scenario for a Chase extension.
#1
It was said repeatedly throughout the contract drama in the preseason that Chase would never be cheaper than he was then. That's a fact, and now we are looking at the consequences of not extending him then and there. He's absolutely balling out right now. The offense, despite the team's record, is borderline elite. Maybe not so borderline. Burrow is peak Burrow.

The likelihood of Chase winning big after betting on himself is incredibly high right now. The team has no choice but to pay him what he wants, which is more than it was 5 weeks ago or have him hold out and show his ass.

This was a dumb move and will be judged as an unforced error by the organization. At the time, I thought Chase was being greedy, but the joke guarantees are not up to par with what a player of his caliber should expect.

He's stands to make a shit ton of cash while the Bengals have a horrific season during his peak productivity.

This was cap management malpractice in every way.

I’ve seen it said that the Bengals are more concerned with winning contract negotiations than games. In this case they aren’t winning either.

Was pretty clear that if the Bengals ever went back to actually throwing deeper passes and having him run routes that weren't already headed for the sideline out of bounds again that Chase was going to absolutely go on a tear.

I know it goes against the Taylor offensive philosophy of "efficiency" that is built around extremely high % short throws and grinding out first downs and 15-17 play drives, but damn if throwing it deeper to Chase doesn't just WORK.

Really? Are you a Capologist? Do you know how everyone's salaries are lining up and structured to know what we could absorb now as opposed to next year, or are you just blowing smoke to make it look like you know more than Katie?

Unequivocally. Now that Snyder is gone Tepper might be the only one who’s clearly worse.

Word is Chase wanted a 3 year extension which defeated the purpose of signing 2 years early but it also pushed Chase's extension into the same off-season as a possible Trey Hendrickson extension. We are talking around 60 million in just signing bonuses for the two of them that's close to more than the Bengals make in net profit for a season.

Anyone expecting a big free agency year in 2025 are going to be disappointed. (And why possibly trading Tee for picks at the deadline is important.)

Kind of difficult for them to sign the guy to what he wants when the team can't come up with the guaranteed at signing amount. They need to work on securing more outside investment into the team.

Well, it's not really pointless, though.  They'd have two years of his current rookie deal to spread the cap hit out, plus, it would still be a lower cap number than signing next year.  Rumor also was he was willing to give on three years and make it four.

They botched it.  Bad.  And over the classic Bengals hangup, guaranteed money.

Hopefully it's a 4 year extension next off-season which puts Ja'Marr under contract for 5 years (6 including this year) instead of signing a 3 year extension this off-season for 5 total years.

For those hoping for a top-5 draft pick next year, if that were to happen I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bengals select a WR and then let Ja'Marr go. Wouldn't that be a kick in the nuts.

I don't think they will extend Trey. He will be 31 years old.

It's time for people to realize that Katie and Troy are just as bad, or maybe even worse, than Mike Brown.

That, or they aren't as in charge as we were led to believe.

I'm predicting that'll get ugly next offseason. There was already the trade request last offseason so he's already going to want more money even without an extension and next year he'll be in his age 31 season. So any extension for him is going to be his age 32 and 33 (and 34?) seasons.

Will the Bengals actually give a player guaranteed money into their 30s? Hendrickson was originally the 3rd oldest player on the team this year behind only Karras (age 31 season) and Trent Brown (age 31 season) before they signed Guy off the street due to injuries. The Taylor Bengals don't really keep guys years into their 30s. The last 4 years I think Riley Reiff (age 33 season in 2021) Michael Thomas (age 32 season in 2022) are the only non-specialists to be on the Week 1 roster while in their age 32 season or later.

If they don't go against their established pattern to give him an extension, I expect a repeat of the trade demands, but this time more prolonged.

Unless Bengals front office goes under major renovations, this scenario would close whatever Super Bowl window they have.

Team fell into Burrow (although they tried to bungle that away via one of the most improbable and stupid comebacks ever - revisit that Miami game) and made a good choice to take Chase.

They didn’t win before Burrow cashed in, and that’s when the window closed. The bungles are still the bungles and the Brown-Blackburns are still the Brown-Blackburns. We had an exciting glance at how the other half lives for 2 years, but our little tryst is over and we’ve wandered back home.
