There are rumors floating around about us making a trade with the Saints for Marcus Lattimore and Chase Young.
Quote:The Cincinnati Bengals are back in the playoff hunt after a dominant victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. With a 4-5 record, they are right in the mix of a crowded AFC Wild Card race. Their focus has shifted to simply making the playoffs, and they clearly need some reinforcements. The Bengals have watched AFC rivals like the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, and Buffalo Bills make trades to strengthen their rosters. If the Bengals want to make a postseason run, they need to add defensive talent, and the perfect fits may be in New Orleans: Marshon Lattimore and Chase Young could be the newest Cincinnati Bengals.
This would seem uncharacteristic of us, but it does seem like a new franchise that sees our best shop for a ship is now and don't want to waste Burrow's years, and a corner and pass rusher would definitely boost our defense.
Quote:Marshon Lattimore has been a solid performer for the New Orleans Saints, providing a reliable outside cornerback presence and the ability to lock down a number one receiver. At 28 years old, Lattimore still has two seasons left on his contract (Lattimore does have a potential out after the season ends), which would expire when he turns 30. The Bengals are known for being cautious about keeping players over 30, so Lattimore’s age and contract length would align well with their strategy. On the field, he could bring some much-needed stability to their inconsistent secondary.
Our secondary definitely needs help and Lattimore would provide with his veteran presence and shut-down ability. He's only 28.
Then there's Chase Young:
Quote:Chase Young, meanwhile, is on a one-year deal with the Saints, so acquiring him would essentially be a rental. This might mean Young’s price is relatively affordable. While he hasn’t fully met the high expectations from his Ohio State days, Young is only 25, and his best years may still be ahead. With 3 sacks in the 2024 season, he has already outperformed any Bengals edge rusher not named Trey Hendrickson. Pairing Young with Hendrickson on the ends of the defensive line would instill a fear factor in opposing offenses, something the Bengals currently lack.
As an Ohio State fan, I'd love this and I think he'd fully reach his potential opposite of Hendrickson. He hasn't had many sacks, but he has had 30 sacks. I think we need to make this move since it would be relatively cheap since, like I said, the Saints are out of it.
Will our front office pull the trigger?

I would love to see Chase Young come to the Bengals on the cheap, but they will not even bring in Marshall to reunite with Burrow and Chase, who has to be an upgrade to the WR room.
I think the team suffers from the same loyalty to a fault that held them back in the Marvin years.
They like Hubbard too much, afraid to move on from Murphy, and the move makes too much sense for the Bengals to do it.

I’d trade every draft pick I could because you know what you are getting is better than what Duke will pick.

The reason draft picks are important is for cost controlled players. The problem with a lot of the players being discussed is expiring rookie deals which lend themselves to having to pay more. It’s a bit about cap management as much as anything.
That said, I posted a week ago about acquiring these two and I’d be on board as they definitely fill holes we need to fill.

Chase Young does not help this team at all. He had a promising rookie season but thats about it. The guy has consistently underachieved in the NFL. He is more hype than anything else. If he had been a 5th round draft pick and put up the same stats over 5 NFL seasons, would anyone be hyping this guy? Young isnt an improvement over what we already have with Hubbard and Murphy.

Hopefully lining up opposite Hendrickson would help him reach his full potential. He has also been hurt (played something less than half the games), which is a red flag, but it also might be why we could get him to sign for cheap.
Maybe give him an incentive-laced contract.

His pressure rate is higher than BJ, Rankins, and Hubbard combined. He would be a substantial upgrade to anyone else on the team not named Trey.

Both Rankins and Hill are tackles so Im not sure why you are comparing them since they play different positions. If you think Young is better than those two at DT lets move him to DT and see how his pressure rate is. We could use the help if Chase is better at DT.
Hubbard is not a good pass rusher and never has been. Hubbard however grades much better against the run than Young who is horrible. Bringing in a guy who is bad against the run on a team that is one of the worst in the NFL isnt very helpful. Young grades out at 169 out of 192 against the run. He grades out at 93 out of 192 in pass rush. Joseph Ossai by comparison grades out at 94 out of 192 in pass rush and 145 out of 192 against the run. If you think a guy playing at Ossai level helps, you are probably going to end up being disappointed when you give up draft picks for such a player when all is said and done

I would like to highlight a little thing called 'situational pass rusher'. He's not going to come in and take a majority of Hubbards snaps.

Because the point is you have 3 guys on the field that can’t get pressure for a team that HAS to get pressure. If you can’t slide doubles to Trey every play and have to fan protections you actually help the DTs. Side note, our DT’s are awful at rushing the passer as many good DT’s actually do get pass rush wins which is kind of relevant to the topic.
No clue where you are grabbing “grades” but Ossai’s pass rush win rate is 9.5% so still 7 points less than Young. I can go on and on, there is not a player on our roster that is within 5 points of Young’s pass rush win rate beyond Trey.
Chase Young would be an instant pass rush upgrade on a team that has to find pas rush help.

So your plan is to keep Young on the bench except certain situational passing situations like 3rd and long? Chase Young has played more snaps this year than Hubbard or Hendrickson for that matter. I dont see Young being very happy about being traded to a team where his snaps would be cut to such a limited number. Young would in all likelihood be traded to rotate at DE in many situations that involve both pass and run. Young isnt great at either one

Guys like Young, on a terrible team and about to get moved to clear cap and gain a draft pick should be thrilled at the chance to get some highlighted time with a contending team. Besides, why would he only be used on 3rd and long? The Bengals still have to face several strong rushing teams this season, they could use Chase on the edge, and kick Hubbard down inside for that 5-2 look that has worked well in the past.
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

Bengals definitely need a Pass Rusher and Running Back although I would like to see Myles Murphy get more snaps. Murphy is looking more and more explosive coming off that knee injury.

I'd dig Lattimore.... I'd rather sign me over Chase Young. At least I'd give effort.

That's why I don't think we will see a DE coming to us.

Ditto. I'd rather continue giving Murphy reps.
