Let's play a game.

Keep Bates at the same contract he was given by ATL.
Structure it the same way they did so that his cap hit last year and this year was under $20 mill combined.
Yes, they are set to have a cap hit of $45 mill for Bates across the last two years of his contract, but with the way he's been playing, you could probably argue it's worth it.

They had $10.7 mill cap space available in 2023 plus they signed Nick Scott to a 3-year, $12 mill deal. Scott carried $2.6 mill cap hit in 2023.
They would have had enough room for Bates minus Scott.

For 2024, let's assume same cap hit for Bates as he has with ATL, so $10 mill.
Let's also assume DJ Reader is kept at same cost he signed with DET, especially structured the way they did (3 void years to reduce cap hit in 2024-2025).
Cap hit this year for Reader is $5.3 mill. Combined with Bates, $15.3 mill.
Bengals would have saved $18 mill if they hadn't signed Stone and Rankins.

I am bringing this up because the Bengals FO could have found a way to make it work with these two cornerstone pieces of the defense.
This defense would be SO much better with Reader and especially Bates compared to Rankins and Stone.
And they still could have done all the same draft picks to develop and all that jazz.

Bengals FO needs to learn how to manage the cap better and stop worrying about frontloading contracts. The winning teams find ways to push the cap further and further down the road because they understand what it means to keep your contending team together as long as you can.

Jesus if the defense can’t survive losing an effing safety, then the coach needs to go. Holy crap this Bates crap is ridiculous. Teams from coast to coast don’t have Jesse Bates and they are doing just fine. Bengals are ranked one higher than the Falcons in pass defense.

I'm not so sure. Bates has been who he is the whole time. Mixon while putting up bigger #s really just seems to be benefiting from the team being much more run focused. I think Bates is what's killing us we need to find a replacement and our having a very hard time doing so. I think we are really only missing Mixon in the short yardage situations. He may have only gotten a couple yards alot but he was hard to stop from getting those yards. The FO has had they're philosophy for a while now and it's not working. Something has to give and unfortunately not sure how quickly we can turn it around.

You’re kidding me right. Carson was 10x the QB Dalton was. He gave his knee and his elbow, even a bloody nose. If Carson had any semblance of a defense and a decent o-line he’d have won multiple playoffs games and had a real chance of taking this team all the way. By the end of Carson’s time here he was seeing ghosts from all the hits he was taking and was never the same player. Carson’s tenure also seemed to be a time where they were fine with signing low character and me first players.

Once they skimped on the o-line it was over.

Im with you and said the same thing, and wished him the best. Some people were acting like Palmer was their girlfriend and left them for someone else.

If the Bengals front office doesn't get their shit together Burrow will also eventually leave as well and go to an organization that is serious about winning.

1.) Bates has made a ton of big plays for the Falcons in the past two seasons.

2.) Our defense was built around him and his ability to cover the deep third side to side.
