On the Burton stuff though, I want to point out that (I'm not a doctor or medical professional, btw, if anyone has wondered lol) Burton looks like a CLASSIC case of being on the autism spectrum. Not that he's autistic, but on the spectrum.

Given that my son is almost 3 and we've had to look out for the myriad of signs of autism (he isn't autistic, FTR), I see a ton of what to look out for, in Burton:

1. Lack of focus (both what we're told in meetings and how he's looked in interviews)
2. Wanting to be alone
3. Awkwardness and a clear lack of social skills

I don't think he necessarily needs a handler or anything like that, but when Zac said that he needs support and the like, that is also a classic case or someone on the spectrum, to keep spirits high and to remain high-functioning.

Daryl Hannah is also autistic and she wasn't diagnosed until she was in her 50s or whatever and she said it made complete sense as to how she thought and felt growing up. 

Really wouldn't be surprised if Burton is the same.

I have a good friend who has a mildly autistic like 8 year old son. He has his (bad) days for sure. And I have a granddaughter with Cerebral Palsy. And I've come to learn that they're very, very routine oriented. If they get even slightly out of routine they start going downhill. 

Perhaps Burton needs a ton of structure and routine built into his practice and even gameday?

Maybe, but since the WR's signed their deals last season, there really hasn't been anyone else setting the needle higher. So the deals they needed to beat last years are still the same deals until this year's batch moves salaries higher.

That's EXACTLY what I think Zac meant in that presser about getting the right people with him, etc.: it's not that he needs a handler or EA (what children/teens have in school, up here), but things need to be communicated to him the right way and he needs to be put in favourable situations in order to succeed: what works to motivate  and keep focus for Ja'marr, Higgins and Iosivas, is not the same for Burton.

As the condition has garnered more study and information in the past 15-20 years or so, there is a lot to unpack and there are many more levels and a lot more to look at than simply, "you're autistic," or otherwise.

Being ADD myself, growing up, my mother enrolled me in many programs/day events to have me better understand and cope with being ADD: while they definitely didn't help me with my own growth and understanding (they didn't: even at 8 years old, I could see that the environment was for those with severe learning disabilities and the like and I EXCELLED as a student throughout my entire life), it made me aware at a young age that there are many different stages of those with learning disabilities and cognitive issues, thus what we know now about the autism spectrum, I lived back when I was a kid, even though I didn't fully grasp that at such a young age.

In college, it's easy to just fade into the background with issues like this, because there are SO MANY coaches and handlers on a college staff, but in the NFL, where anyone with a situation like this needs to hire a person privately or through the team for the same purpose, it can expose the, "afflicted," person a lot more and that would explain the issues that he has been having.

Again, not saying this is the case (I am not a doctor, medical professional, nor do I know Jermaine personally {obviously}), but if it came out that it was the case, I would not be surprised in the slightest.

Well, Ja'Marr will set the needle higher pretty sure. He will have to be the highest paid WR ever after this season.

Just the way it has went as some of us predicted. Ja'Marr is such a rare talent with his strength, balance, quicks and deep speed.

Burton would have received help from an SAS office while in college. They likely could have provided executive functioning skills support and, I assume, a football program like Alabama probably has professional staff herding the players from one responsibility to the next. It's a very real part of DI sports.

I did suggest in a thread awhile back that I wouldn't be surprised if Burton had ADHD, was on the spectrum, had a specific learning disability, or comorbidities. I also prefaced I am not qualified to make a diagnosis. I think the only reply served to mock the take. I'm glad to see some reasonable conversation about the topic is happening.

Spot on about a lot to unpack. Comorbidity is increasingly prevalent for individuals with an official diagnosis of some kind.

Yeah, I think you called it right. My daughter is on the spectrum. What they used to call Asperger's, high functioning and not autistic, but missed the normal social clues that seem so easy to other people. Being "on the spectrum" manifests itself in a myriad of ways.
