Duke Tobin: Held onto some players too long
#81
(01-29-2025, 05:00 PM)Nate (formerly eliminate08) Wrote: There is only a couple players on Defense that he might of held onto too long in Hubbard and bringing back Bell. Hubbard was hurt last
year and Vonn was really cheap, pretty much being paid by the Panthers to play for us. This wasn't the main problem, the main problem
was letting Bates and Reader go without getting anything for them, adding shitty players in FA and Drafting poorly.

I don't get what Duke is saying here even if it is a good thing to admit mistakes were made. Lou made the mistake of starting Hubbard
and Bell, one was hurt and the other was washed up evidently. Ossai and Battle should of started over these two clearly looking back.

I agree with this, and others' sentiments about the statement. I'm just glad this guy finally admitted some blame, any blame!

The problem was that he let Bates, Reader, Awuzie, Ogunjobi, Bell, Apple all leave and failed to adequately replace them.

They’ve subsequently spent a first round pick (Dax Hill), a third round pick(Jordan Battle) and two FAs (Nick Scott and Geno Stone) to try and replace Bates and Bell; a second (Kris Jenkins) and a third round (McKinley Jackson) picks to try and replace DJ Reader; two second round picks (DJ Turner and CTB) to try and replace Awuzie; $10m on Sheldon Rankins to replace Ogunjobi; a fourth round (Fig Newton) to replace Eli Apple and none of those have worked out yet - albeit some may yet do so.

At the risk of repeating everyone else unless this is buyer’s remorse at extending Pratt the only one they hung onto for too long was Hubbard for whom it was a season too far but given his status it would have been a surprise had they moved on from him this time last year.

I feel like Ogunjobi is a largely underrated loss.

these are a couple of blurbs...there is more in the article

this is as blunt as I've ever heard Duke speak about a player

I saw that quote about Burton on social media. As much grief as I give Duke, I REALLY liked that statement. Shit or get off the pot young man.

Reading the comments:
Apple, yeah maybe the right move. He always seemed to step up regardless of his history/deficiancies. Perhaps at least brought him in to camp, and cut bait if he was still a oain ( I suspect that he was). Now we have Burton to fill that role, lol. Except Burton doesn’t step up like Apple did.
Bell and Bates were a great duo, and should have both been retained. Battle has to beat Bell out to start.
I didn’t pay attention to Perine at the Broncos. He’s been great at the Chiefs. It seemed like every time he came this year in he made a critical clutch play. I stand by that. Our FO should have found a way.
Reader should have been retained. No brainer.

Perine should have been brought back this year. Unless he absolutely ruled it out. Which begs a question, why not? He’s an excellent role player, the kind you need to win a championship, IMHO.
Go Benton Panthers!!

Here is Kelsey Conway with Mo:

Pretty good interview with her. She gets into specifics regarding the Chase, Higgins, and Trey stuff.

I do not feel good at all about this off-season regarding those players.

Chase and Tee will get done if not than Burrow might ask for a trade; FYI I don't think it will get to point.

Trey on the other hand will get nasty.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

I really don't think Tee is getting extended.

Well that would be a bold strategy on the FO part because Joe has been very vocal about it.

Paul Dhener and James Raipen  are far more positive on Tee being back next season.

Yeah, better keep Joe happy. I didn't expect Lou and most of the Defensive coaches and Pollack to be cut.

I now think Tee will be brought back with some sort of Joe Burrow restructure to make it happen. I take Joe at his word, and I also look
at recent moves unlike a lot of Bengals fans who act like Mikey Boy is the Bengal God still. He is still here, but the youth runs the team now.

If they don’t reward Chase then that’s definitely not going to sit well with Joe. I’d say that would be the death knell for their relationship. Tee is not as critical but they’ve got to make an effort. They could have saved a lot of money signing Chase before the season.
Romo “ so impressed with Zac ...1 of the best in the NFL… they are just fundamentally sound. Taylor the best winning % in the Playoffs of current coaches. Joe Burrow” Zac is the best head coach in the NFL & that gives me a lot of confidence." Taylor led the Bengals to their first playoff win since 1990, ending the longest active drought in the four major North American sports, en and appeared in Super Bowl LVI, the first since 1988.

If that unfortunate scenario unfolds, then I am willing to bet I won't be the only fan they lose forever, unless they get bought out or something.

I really don't think i could ever root for another team and I try to never say I'm done with the team for that reason. But if Burrow got to the point he was asking for a trade because we continue to drag our feet on contracts. That would be a hard pill to swallow for me.
