I like this signing a lot more than I do the re-signing of BJ Hill.

This team missed a NT last season badly and it led to a historically bad run D. I think Slaton will help to get more out of Kris Jenkins

What it doesn’t do is improve the pass rush. Oh for another Geno Atkins to go with him.

Ocho, Golden took quite a bit from Freeman's style (4-3-4, 4-2-5, 3-3-5) while in Notre Dame. 

Golden's 4-3 formation might as well be a 3-4, because he uses a NT flanked by a big DE on one side and a DT on the other. The DE on the opposite edge (the Vyper) is a hybrid (OLB/Edge) who rushes from a 3 point stance.

When he brought in Desai to the Bengals staff, I started thinking that he wants to sprinkle in the Fangio defense here. Which may be the case.

That then had me thinking as to how Trey would fit into the plan...... and that we need an OLB/Edge type (in addition to Ossai) and more safety help.

Yeah I saw where some fans were commenting on an article about him that it shouldn't take more than 4M/yr to keep him since they only played him 39% of the snaps in a healthy season.  Maybe the Pack thought that way too, lowballed him at 5 and Cincy spent more to secure him.  Even if Jackson improves they have a nice platoon to keep each other fresh. 

Bengals NEEDED a run stopper on D Line. The Big Man from Packers is a welcome addition. Teams in the AFC North run the ball. So if you can't stop the run, you can't go play-offs. Bengals needed The Big Man.

Our eldest son is a Packers fan, he was disappointed that Slaton wasn't re-signed by the Packers.

Any time a fan base of a team mourns a player leaving in free agency to join our team, it makes me feel like the signing was good.

The worst is when you go look and they are celebrating someone finally taking a player off their hands. That's a horrible sign haha.

Slaton was a good grab I think. Just need to grab a Guard to replace Cappa and another one to at least compete for the LG spot.

Slaton reminds a bit of Domata Peko, another big DT who people didn't always appreciate because he lacked "splash" but the numbers did not lie - when he was in the run defense was rather better. Why? Because he anchored his spot, took at least one possibly 2 blockers and thus made things easier for the rest of the DL. This was what Slaton brought to the Pack and what we hope he brings here. We had a DT room last season of essentially all 3Ts (Jackson despite his size plays like a 3T) and the lack of anyone fitting the NT role came back to bite us a lot.

Part of the low grade of so many NTs is due to their responsibility to draw, and occupy 2 blockers. Many times those plays are graded as a Zero, no win, no loss. They don't award him a partial point for allowing the LB to make the play unimpeded. Which is often the desired result of their coaches.

To further expand on the subject, I decided to look at Slaton's stats compared to Poona Ford's, as a couple of board members were desiring the team to look at him.

Ford: 2024  39 tackles in 604 snaps = 6.4% tackle rate  In 2021, Ford's best season, 53 tackles in 802 snaps = 6.6% tackle rate. Pretty good for a NT.

Slaton: 2024 30 tackles in 427 snaps = 7.0% tackle rate. In 2023, Slaton's first year as starter, 50 tackles in 626 snaps = 8.0% tackle rate. Damn good for a NT.

The Bengals could have done much worse than TJ Slaton at NT, he really is efficient for his position.
