I still might prefer Scherff, but it's a pretty good sign when players are throwing it out there that they'd love to be a part of your team.

Quote:CINCINNATI — Free agent guard Dalton Risner wants to be a Bengal.
The Wrightway Sports Network's Malik Wright posted a TikTok this week that Risner commented on. He said he'd love to be a Bengal as the team still has a big hole at the guard position in front of Joe Burrow.
"Would LOVE to be a Bengal," Risner commented on Wright's post.
Risner played in 10 games for Minnesota last season due to injury after appearing in 15-plus outings per season since entering the league in 2019. He notched a 67 overall Pro Football Focus grade last season on 537 snaps, including a career-high 76.2 pass-blocking grade.
PFF projects him to sign a one-year, $4.5 million deal at 29 years old.

Hopefully the Bengals front office can pause their efforts to leave the city long enough to perhaps open a social media app and see the opportunity they could have to make this team better...

Either would be great, but at three year $15M deals. Scherff would be discounted due to age at years 2 and 3.

He has been on the radar for many fans for some time. It is great he wants to a Bengal, I keep reading in this forum because we have given Trey 35 to 40 million years extension we are cheap and no one wants to come here.
On a serious note, to me he would be a great addition. I would love to see it and see it prior the draft. But, I am a dreamer and my hopes and dreams rarely align with the FO.
It must mean he is healthy now as well.
Please use 2025 free agency to fix the trenches, not the draft!!!!!!!!

Well, it should be mutual and Risner saying this means he is healthy as Luvnit says unlike Scherff for all we know who could be on the
brink of retirement. Risner would be an upgrade over Volson I have no doubt. We can draft a future Guard to learn behind him and Patrick.
Cannot rely on rookies, not many of them are like Amarius Mims that can come in right away and not look bad.

IMO if you add Risner and an early draft pick, that should really help bolster the OL this year.
Ford and Patrick would be quality, versatile depth.
Volson could be the last OL off the bench, or kicked to the curb for all I care.
Heck, Bengals could (nearly) cover Risner's salary with cutting Volson ($3.6 mill).
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs
Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.

If paying one player 3 to 5 million a year is the issue (we don't know for sure if money or other reason), it is going to be a long season.
As you said, if he beats Volson out in camp, we can cut Volson so money should not even play into the equation unless they are saving money to extend Trey.

Agree here, especially since I don't see the Bengals being able to take a guard until the second round at the earliest. So that could end up being a good/solid pick but it will definitely take some time.

If we're the Bengals, does it make sense to hoard as much cap as possible this year and roll it over next year to help cover Hendrickson (tag)?

Heck, even with Mims we still brought in Trent Brown in FA even if he didn't play much before going down with injury.
And Mims was pretty polished as far as play on the field before we drafted him even if he didn't have a ton of snaps at Georgia, they were
very good looking snaps. Getting Lucas Patrick was a good move, but I think Risner would be great insurance for both Guard spots and for a
rookie to learn behind.
If we don't bring in Risner I think there must be some confidence in Matt Lee and maybe moving Karras to LG like he did with NE.

I meant if they needed the cash to pay the bonus of for the extension in 2025.

Good point, we did bring in a solid vet who issues were not performance, but availability.
I an not a fan of ifs. I would feel much better if (lol) Bengals added a vet guard prior to the draft to compete diretcly againts Volson in TC.

I don't know that Scherff is on the brink of retirement, he's played every game the past 3 years and committed a total of two (2) holding penalties. Now, I do think he might be at a point where he just wants to skip OTAs and first part of camp and just show up and play the season. He's a more complete player, I would plug him in at RG and forget about it for the year. Mims likely would benefit greatly having a guy like Scherff playing next to him.
On Risner, I do like him as well, he also has a very low penalty rate. The issue with him is the durability, he's never hit 1,000 snaps in a season (but close a couple of times). I just think that it's great that he's putting it right out there that he'd love to be part of the team.
When the draft comes to pass, if the Bengals are looking to add a lower cost vet, there should still be a couple to choose from.

Yea I get it, although I have very little confidence Hendrickson gets extended this offseason.
I really do think it makes the most sense to try to negotiate again next Winter and tag him if necessary...if the team really is strapped for cash in 2025 that is.

Yep, sounds almost just like this with Risner who hasn't had the best of luck staying healthy, but at least he would be a cushion for a bit
until the rookie is close to up to speed. At the very least push Volson for heck sake. I don't like handing him the starting LG spot at all.

Good point, I just heard a rumor of Scherff considering retiring. I don't know if there is anything to it though. Scherff probably would help
Mims a bunch but part of the reason our OL doesn't look right entering the season is not playing much in Preseason pretty sure. Would
rather have all the starting OL playing before the opener.
Also true that we can add a Guard after the Draft. Might be even more available. I also like players who want to be on the Bengals and
you would think the Bengals would too. We will see if eventually we see Risner or Scherff in stripes. Just the time of year we all get a bit
ancy for something to happen.

If we agree that RG is the second most important position on OL in terms of pass blocking, then Scherff would be at RG and Risner go back to LG.
If we don't get both, then Volson stays at LG.

Don't forget that they signed Lucas Patrick to compete for a job as well.

Of the starter level guards out there, I'd go:
1) Hernandez
2) Scherff
3) Risner
Dalton is likely the cheapest. Scherff the oldest, but with the best resume and durability. Hernandez with the best run block and overall grades
