Notes From Training Camp 2025

Yeah... Except that during Burrow's rookie contract all of the money was on the defensive side of the ball. One middle of the pack finish is all there was to show for it. I honestly can't believe Lou was ever considered HC material around the league. Honestly I'm surprised he got another DC job.

(Yesterday, 01:30 PM)Joelist Wrote: I liked Lou in some respects but he did have an achilles heel in that his scheme required experienced pros with football smarts to execute it correctly. That was why when Lou finally bowed to reality and simplified the defense the play improved, and it also was his death knell. Golden's whole rep is around coaching players up and making the calls and alignments of his defense digestible by players so they concentrate on play on the field and not trying to understand the scheme.

This is true and not true.

The Bengals started 2024 in a very simple heavy 5 man defensive line front playing cover 1 man on the back end. After the Panthers game when Cam Taylor Britt, Geno Stone, and the DL were struggling Lou added in alot more Run/Pass blitzing because without a nose tackle and a beat up DL teams were running it down their throat.

By the end of the year the scheme "simplified" because the Offenses they faced simplified. Raiders, Cowboys, Browns, Bronco, Titans, even the Steelers (even though they got lit up by check downs in thr first game).

Lou Anarumo was the best scheme coach on staff if that was his only job he would be alot better DC and maybe in will be Indy. Here he was a major voice in stacking the draft board and it's felt like he tooks some players without a real plan (Dax Hill, Myles Murphy). I think it also hurt him he never had a second string to his DL.

Today is the media lunch…the one day per year Mike Brown talks to reporters. I would assume the contract situations for Hendrickson and Stewart will be questions 1a and 1b

Mike Brown:  doesn't get why Shemar is holding out over the clause common in many NFL contracts.
expects the lease to be signed before the end of the month
expects a Trey deal as well
would love to have a practice facility like the UC Bearcats

Duke: Shemar is getting bad advice.  I don't think I've ever seen them publically call out an agent.  I  agree with that assessment...said the same thing in his thread

Zac: both BJ Hill and Dax Hill will be cleared to practice on day 1. They will be load managed especially at the beginning of camp
has spoken to Trey in recent days
Dan Pitcher: Fairchild will work ONLY as LG; Ford and Patrick primarily on the right side
expects a lot of focus on getting Chase Brown involved

Al Golden: can't wait to get the contract disputes over with and guys in camp
best day of the off season was Joe Burrow coming into the defensive room and holding a 4 hour master class on what a QB looks for and sees
loves his secondary talent
watching to see who steps up and takes over as defensive leaders with all of last years captains gone

Mike Brown said all the right things, as far as I can see. (Ok, maybe not complaining about taxes. LOL). But if he wanted to make more money, he probably could move the Bengals to a larger market. I think he genuinely considers it part of his legacy to remain loyal to Cincinnati. His comments on Trey were hopeful. And his (and Tobin's) comments on Shemar frank.

If he is a rich man, why is that an issue anyway? Those who like to trash him do so saying he is a billionaire living like someone with money issues. Would that rather he buy jets and yachts?

Let's hope Trey deal gets done today, sounds like they are close. Then we can mover on from the drama. Also, great news on Hill and Hill being ready for camp. I am most shocked by Dax Hill after ACL. That is a quick turn around so hope he is not coming back too soon. But one thing has to be true, he had to work his ass off to be ready this quick so shows he wants to be on the field and not sitting in the hot tub.

I agree, but others would ignore when MB does anything right. Nice points.

I'm not gonna make jokes about it. Simply, his perception is different (seemingly) to most NFL fans. He wants to do it, but he wants to do it his way. That's always been my gripe and why i've said multiple times that they 'want to re-invent the wheel'.

I'm sure he doesn't see himself as cheap, but comparitively...

Anyway. If i'm being as straightforward as i can, i like a lot of what they've done since Burrow has been here but the things i don't like are big things, so i probably focus on them more because it feels like those are the things that are keeping them from rings.

If they extend Trey this week, would you admit this was a hard process with Trey, but commend FO for getting it done. They could have made him play for peanuts or sit out, but if they get it done to me a whole bunch of drama queens fretting about 2025 would look like well..........drama queens

I don't know that there's anything to "admit", because i've never said they wouldn't get it done. I've actually expected them to at some point, which will make me question why it was so hard--if they come to terms closer to what Trey's been asking.

It's not being a drama queen to point out how difficult it always seems to be getting good guys signed on time, let alone early and beneficial to the team.

I'll be happy as hell when Trey puts his name on the dotted line but i can't just make the questions of 'why' go out of my head.

They argue and bargain and fight for money and then in the end, capitulate. Is it too much to ask for them to learn a lesson from time to time and try to get some contracts done early, before markets go up?

They did, literally the contract everyone is bashing the team for not jumping through hoops to cancel the existing contract.

My point is maybe fans should quit getting carried away in the off season drama, if he signs this week it was all for naught (the drama), fan induced and not any impact on the 2025 season at all.

I love this and a shame rookie Stewart missed it. He could come to meetings, but is letting his agent control him it appears. I hope they taped it so he cans see later.

4 hours is a ton of info and probably some info for each position group as well.

Stop getting carried away that they gave him a subpar 1 year extension then tried to play hardball? Nah. Feel free to do that. I ain't. I told you earlier, this is just how i expected it to turn out and it doesn't make it any less annoying that they "finally" got it done.

There isn't a damn thing wrong with calling something out when it's tried and true. No bullshit. No hyperbole. Long, long, history of contract (and other bullshit).

Neither you nor anyone else gets to erase that long history just because they signed Tee, Ja'marr and hopefully Trey, after dragging it out.

There is zero chance in hell of my stance on the FO changing until they do what it takes to get that ring. Then they're off the hook.

If you wanna call out "drama queens" because they say "ohh, the Bengals will never get this done because they're too cheap" feel free. I'm not one of them.

I think he's talking Inheritance tax. Many times when the owner dies, the kids cant pay the tax because its based on value of franchise.

I think its part of why the Bengals dont do huge cash payouts.
