***Preseason Gameday Thread - Bengals @ Eagles***

There was zero reason to think this defense was going to be any better this year than last.

Well one player at Tees salary would not make this D even mediocre so might as well sign those guys and try to out score them.

Also, that’s why good teams are able to draft the players around their high paid stars. Dax, Murphy etc have not been impactful 1st rounders and Stewart has a long way to go but hopefully will get there.

BTW - Are you saying you would not have paid Chase? That’s crazy talk.

He has known that. Any time you are paying your qb $50 plus million, then completely reset the #1 and #2 receiver market, you can’t expect to be good anywhere else.

Lou had one of the worst defensive personnel to work with. You can’t work miracles when you’ve got no talent.

Probably shouldve paid Trey pre draft and than added talent somewhere else on defense.

Someone pip a few Adderall in Ole man Mike and get him on the phone with Treys agent right now.

It’s about time someone placed the blame where it belongs.

When you keep whiffing on Defensive players and O line, you can’t catch up

It sounds like a good idea.

OK, we know Burrow to Chase is great.  Blocking and Offense looked good 1st Half.  The Defense still stinks, but it is early in preseason.  Hopefully they can improve.  As for tonight, what I saw was what I saw last season of Good Offense, Bad Defense.

But plenty still would.

How people feel about Carson all these years later is a good litmus test for Bengals fans.

Honestly there are alot of new faces on defense. It was probably always gonna take some games before they become whatever they are gonna be.

I get we were missing BJ Hill, CTB and Dax but still that was embarrassing - the Eagles were playing their 2s. Golden should be absolutely embarrassed.

That’s what you got out of my post? You have to pay Jamarr, but you don’t have to pay him $5 million more than the next highest paid receiver. If it takes that much make him play the year out, you get ZERO discount extending him now.
What I would not have done is pay Tee $30 million. Love the guy, but he will get hurt and miss crucial time. And even if he didn’t, this team doesn’t have the roster or scouting to allocate that much to a #2 receiver.
I’ve made it known I hate how we draft. Stewart was a complete waste of a pick and we reached for every player we took outside of a few backend guys.

Yep.

Bengals backups are never good, since forever (which is honestly a problem--but i digress). If the starting CBs and Trey get on the field and the defense can just be near average, it should play out well. It's just a real pain watching anything other than the legit 1st string with this team and it's been like that for a loooong time.

You'd hope they'd be competitive but it is what it is. 1st string needs to be ironmen.

The only way this defense will work, is if we play keep away and hold onto time of possession.

Everyone should know they aren't going to be elite. But they may be a middle of the road defense. One half of a preseason game isn't going to tell us what they are.

Can't believe some of you are getting this worked up over backups in a preseason game. I get it but i won't start to panic until we see what happens week 1.
