Tycen Anderson

He has been an ace special teamer. That alone should solidify his roster spot. He has way more athleticism than Stone and more than Battle.

RAS: Anderson 9.49, Battle 8.98, Stone 3.81, Anthony 6.58.

Let's just hope that he's learned and adapted enough to the pro game that he can actually step up and claim a spot.

For sure, big fast Safeties like Tycen are always intriguing. Just like Emmanwori this last draft. Tycen isn't that big, but he is big enough
and with his speed and range we thought he would be special once he got a chance. This might be it. But like I said, Geno Stone sucked
last year and the coaches didn't give Tycen a shot.

We have new defensive coaches, though, so it is possible if Tycen plays lights out this PS.

Sure seems like it. I know Tycen had some rough plays in OTA's but it matters much more how you play this time of year.

Well to be fair, Stone started excelling once Lou made changes to the defense. Stone then started looking more like himself.

True, but he still wasn't a very good tackler and just is blessed with good hands to make interceptions being his one gift.

Geno lucks into a lot of interceptions too, I just really like Tycen and if Geno struggles we might have the guy to fall back on in the room.

This is a good thing as Marv used to say lol

Yes, I hope Anderson shines as well, because I do not see Stone as a long term solution.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

Trading up to get a giy you only use on special teams (and not a returner/kicker) makes zero sense. But that is ZT/Lou for you.

Glad he is getting a shot.

Tycen has never looked bad...in a game...in my eyes.  Never makes the wrong assignment, never whiffs on a tackle (Geno Stone), and never has stupid penalties.

He had a PFF grade of 76 in PS1, with a borderline elite 87 in tackling.  I know he is a special teams ace, but I am really hoping that he gets a shot with the ones and Jordan Battle in this game.  His biggest issue has been health.  He had a two INT preseason game in 2023 against the Packers with one of them going for a pick-6.

I don't think his contributions on special teams should prevent him from getting a shot to start.  Or at the very least, be one of the first options off the bench.

Remember, this is the same team that was starting Zach Moss over Chase Brown until an injury got Brown more of a workload.

Thoughts?

I called him out for being a break out player this season, but did not remember you opining there.

Did you miss the roll call of said fan club...

The criticism of Anderson coming into the draft were his long-range coverage from the slot or near the line, with an accompanying expectation that he might transition to linebacker.  Instead he has excelled at special teams, which are all about taking long-range angles and tackling in the open field.  He may not play great with the ball in the air, but he has recovery speed and tackling ability.  I expect him to excel in run defense in 2-high and do OK in single high.  He may not play great in deep single coverage, but neither does Stone.. or Battle.. or Dax for that matter. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the experiment.
BTW, agree with the observation that ZT/Lou seem to have traded up for a ST gunner without trying and develop Anderson into a every down player. Old News but I wanna give credit where it's due.

Then Tycen got burnt a bit in OTA's so I am taking a pause until he impresses a bit more. But Tycen could be better than Geno Stone easy IMO.

But to see the coaches start Tycen over Geno would surprise me no matter how he played.

Good to hear from you after a long time away (me), my friend.

I get this point, but I also think Stone was the beneficiary of the "you are getting paid, so you will be playing" M.O. of the Bengals.  See Rankins, Sheldon for an example of sucking ass and still starting.

I'm hoping Tycen takes the job and Stone isn't ready week 1, forcing their hand, and he never looks back.

Sounds like he's got a lot of potential.  This would be the time to see if can translate.   A few snaps won't be enough

Not sure of the coach's name, but one interview I heard in the offseason he mentioned Tycen and being able to stay healthy and how he wants him to challenge for playing time on defense as well this year.  Of course, the fact that I can't remember which coach it was probably doesn't put much weight behind that statement, but I am hopeful nonetheless.

I view speed and tackling as keys for a safety and Tycen has them both at a borderline elite level.  Stone has neither of those things.

Going to be a lot better around here with you back buddy. Completely agree, sometimes we have to rely on injuries forcing the coaches/FO's
hand around this place. As we see with us bringing in Risner finally because of the injuries to Patrick and Ford. Just the life of a Bengals fan.

Tycen Anderson has the size, speed and tackling abilities to make him a starter in the NFL. Hope he plays great tonight and forces the coaches
hand in starting him over Geno Stone. FS is about my biggest concern on the team besides Guard and Trey getting extended. I like Fairchild a
lot and bringing in Risner sure helps Guard. If Tycen can be the answer at FS we are in a much better spot heading into the season.

He definitely started to flash a little when they changed how they were using him. It would be nice to see Tycen flash tonight just for the depth security that he could provide.

Several of us have been quiet Tycen Anderson fans for years now. We are all hoping that he gets the opportunity to put on display the physical traits, instincts and characteristics that allowed him to create an almost unreal highlight reel from college. This man didn't ever forget how to play football, no he suffered a season ending injury as a rookie, and then was brought back softly to 'teams. He's excelled in 'teams, time for him to step up and show what he can really do tonight.

This is kinda of like year 3 for him, didn't he miss most of 2022?

Let's hope he excels tonight and moving forward.

He had a bad hamstring injury in 2022 and missed his entire rookie season.  In 2023 he tore his ACL.  In 2024 he finally had a healthy season and played well on special teams.  Hopefully he stays healthy and is ready to take the next step.  He has the physical tools.

Yikes, he was a 5th round pick and played 1 year. He may be the breakout guy, like his 2nd year versus 4th.
