Volson to miss the season
#1
Per Zac, shoulder surgery. Injury suffered in practice. Doesn’t change much, except depth. All the more reason to try and get Risner signed.

Just saw this in the Risner thread. Yep, I thought Volson could maybe be decent depth so this hurts.

I don't know how serious the Patrick and Ford injuries are?

Isn't Seattle sitting on some interior o-line depth, unless I am mistaken.

Might be able to get a value trade there?

Love to see the Bengals make two moves to shore up the inside, Risner and a trade.

Hate to think they may be planning to bump up the OSU kid to starting at center and moving Karras to guard.

Seattle has been drafting quality on the OL for years, I don't know how healthy they are but that is a good thought Rugby.

I like Seth Mclaughlin but he isn't starting quality yet and Fairchild has been playing good at LG where Karras played better.

Would hate to move Fairchild which is why I liked bringing in Risner who played RG last year with the Vikes.

Risner is also visiting Seattle, so I don't think they are particularly deep.

They should have cut Volson when they had the chance and created more cap space. Now Volson gets his money and the Bengals take a cap hit.

Best option we have in house without bringing someone else in.

It is not a bad idea at all Karras is a durable guy as long as he does not suck at blocking at RG.

As soon as they knew Fairchild could play LG he should have been cut.

Volson only real help he could give us was playing RG which we already brought in a free agent RG.

Or backing up LG which would have been an expensive backup.

I figured Volson was a possible cut candidate anyways so. How well did Rivers really do at guard?

That's not the Bengals MO. They have a solid piece at C and Fairchild is good at LG. They'll continue to plug guys in at G (one position) to compensate, instead of making moves to two positions.

Besides Jonah, what other semi-long term guy have they moved out of necessity? I'd be really surprised if they did this, though i'm not against it.

Coach: Hey, we're down a player. Out for the year.

Kate and MB: Looks at the sold-out season and says, "We're good."

Unfortunately, I think that you're closer to right than wrong on that one.

Here's what sucks with this franchise. MB learned from his father. PB is an ICON in Cincinnati. Hell, he's an icon in the NFL. But the lessons taught back in the day to his son are not the lessons MB needs to be lockstepped in. The NFL changes. Strategies change as well. It all changes. PB would make the necessary adjustments to win. MB, yeah, we don't need that, we only need this. Drives me crazy. But here's the problem.

Most of us were happy that MB stepped back and turned the reins over to Kate and her loser clown. But, she's doing the same as her father. FUDGE! Why?

I guess I know my answer. It's a business to them, and that's it. It's not about the fans at all. It's marketing the best you can to make a profit without expenditure. Spend some investment here (right hand) and ignore this over here (left hand). It's enough to fill the seats while banking one helluva profit.

Does anyone think we are a crowd at a circus yet, or in a magician's show? It's all a show to them. Present, cash in, repeat.

Nonsense. When they got an inkling Volson had a serious injury, Risner was here almost immediately.

Now, if you want to argue how asinine it is that Volson had to get hurt to get them to uograde the OG spot, then I am with you.

Fairchild + Risner + Patrick + Rivers + Ford is plenty of cover at guard. I realize that Risner is hardly a done deal.

This post made me realize why we didnt get Risner signed and it kind of terrifies me. Of course they knew the severity of Volson which the rest of us didnt at the time. They called Risner not to have a potential upgrade over Patrick like we thought but to fill the depth Volson did. They aren't thinking cheap starter money they are thinking cheap backup money. We are ******.

With Volson's injury I don't see how they don't bring someone else in.

This might be it for Volson's tenure as a Bengal given it's his final year under contract.
I have a feeling they'll offer him some cheap deal to return next offseason just to give him another chance to try to make the team.
He may want to go elsewhere though after essentially getting demoted from the position he started at for 3 years.

Unfortunately, Volson's cap hit was kinda high for what value he was going to bring ($3.1 mill for very likely just a backup), and they had the opportunity to let him go and free up about $2.5 mill in cap, but now with him injured, they gotta eat it all.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs

Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Another example of holding on to certain players too long.  The money they could have saved cutting Volson could have been used to sign Risner.  Now that money is gone.  The Bengals still have plenty left they could sign Risner with but they could have saved themselves an extra 2.5 million that will now have to be paid out to Volson.   That's bad management.
