RIP Harambe - a Cincy zoo gorilla
(06-02-2016, 02:41 PM)rfaulk34 Wrote: I'm already aware of everything you posted here. I've read it and watched videos as well. I'm not taking the family or the zoo's side. I tend to try and wait for a more complete set of facts to emerge before i cast aspersions. Something that a multitude of people started doing the minute the story came out. As i've already said on more than one occasion, the mother may be completely at fault and negligent and could very well deserve to have charges brought against her.

My OP in this thread was for those 'internet experts on all things' that pop up everywhere. The ones that charge, try and convict based on a whole lot of conjecture. The impression i'm getting is that you are trying to put yourself in that group.

You can put me in the group that says if you cannot control your children you need to pay the consequences.  That gorilla is dead because her son got down there.  She is responsible for her sons actions.  Therefore, she is responsible for the gorilla's death.  If her son had broken an expensive piece of glass or something at the zoo, would she not need to pay for said glass?

I appreciate your waiting for all the evidence and being calm and restrained, but I just can't imagine a scenario where it could be anything but the mothers fault here.  If it was a strong gust of wind, that would fall into the accident category and I could understand not going after her.  I think we would have heard about something like that already.  There were witnesses.  Can you tell me what kind of scenario you have in mind where it would not be the mothers fault?  I'm hearing a lot of 'taking your eyes off a kid for one second' type excuses.  No way it was literally '1 second' and even 15 seconds is inexcusable given their proximity to a GORILLA.

To be completely honest, a lot of my current animosity is rooted in an experience I had over the weekend at a HS graduation.  Extended family in front of me, all the way from the grandparents to the kid, should not have been procreating what so ever.  Little moron kid starts walking around making a bunch of noise during the ceremony, shitty parents did nothing.  Kid comes back, finally sits down and proceeds to watch videos on his mothers phone WITH THE ***** SOUND ON HIGH.  Shitty parents did nothing.  I finally had to step in and tell them if they weren't going to control their child and respect the ceremony they needed to get the **** out of the gymnasium.   We all see this shit all the time and I'm just at my breaking point when it comes to irresponsible parents putting the burden of their shittily raised livestock of children on the public at large.

and the gorilla dragged the kid, but he didnt look hurt

i just think they could have gone about it differently instead of shooting and killing him

Yes.  The reaction of thy bystanders did not help one bit, nor did the mother screaming at the child.  Had people remained calm there could have been a completely different outcome.  Unfortunately everyone had to take their phone out, watch this go down and emote feverishly to sell their terror for their FB followers.

Of coarse, mom could have just kept the kid from going in there like every other person ever has done.  But, that is too much to ask of parents these days.

or go after the kid...not sure how many parents wouldnt have been right after the kid to get them out? i would ask where the father was, but i think we all know the answer to that

I'd say our only difference in opinion is how easily a child could end up in this situation.

We're in agreement on responsibility. The only difference for me is my first point. How attentive was she and did she have too many kids to properly supervise them?

Totally agree on demon-children. Reminds me of a time at Mr. Gatti's (pizza place). Mom was paying and getting plates and whatnot. Kids were standing up in their chairs at the table, shouting stuff at mom and generally being a nuisance. Dad was sitting right there at the table, arms crossed, ignoring the kids and staring blankly at the TV.

but if you told your parents over and over, "mommy i wanna go in there" wouldnt they think "shit, i better keep my eye on him until we leave the exhibit"?

Wow....there are a TON of perfect Parents on this thread! Apparently no one has ever had a Child get hurt or had a close call on their watch.......or one that has slipped out of their sight for a few seconds. (that's all it takes!) I don't care who you are or how perfect you think you are....these things happen. The only difference is, usually extreme things like your child ending up in a Gorilla enclosure do not happen.....and most of the time there is a happy ending. (you don't hear about these things though)
Ultimately....Yes....it is the parents responsibility....and I am sure these parents are overwhelmed with guilt for what happened to their Child....not to mention Harambe.

But.....It was an ACCIDENT (an event that happens by chance or that is without apparent or deliberate cause) Just a freak Accident. Yes....the kid said he wanted to go play in the water and was told NO, he could not go in....but seriously.....would you have EVER thought for second that your Child would have actually tried....much less SUCCEEDED in going into the enclosure? Kids say they want to do a lot of things.....many times a day.....so this would not have raised red flags for most parents.

The Mom has to live with the horror of seeing her Son in that situation.....and the Death of Harambe. She will be paying her dues for a long time and nothing the Media.....or you....or I say......will make her feel any worse. (or better for that matter)

I let my kids drink out of the toilet and the dog's bowl...wouldn't want to shelter them too much and make them fragile!

What if that hose was owned by a transgender person?

Thankfully this kid didn't decide to crawl in the bengal tiger enclosure. The NFL would have added another game to Tez's suspension.

I've given the mom the benefit of the doubt throughout this; however, if they try to sue the Zoo my opinion may change.

What if it was an Asian person?   You seem to have issues with drinking out of particular garden hoses.   So you tell me which are the good garden hoses and which are the bad ones....

Was always cool when they had a Bengal tiger on the field at riverfront

Agreed hopefully she doesn't...   But I fear some attorney and probably friends or family will get into her ear about it...

I get the point about the tranq dart potentially enraging the Gorilla, but where are the people trained to handle Gorillas?  The Gorilla was acting rather calmly.  I just feel that it was pointless to shoot first, without even attempting any other possibilities.

Oh, and that Mother should be held liable for whatever the monetary cost of a Silverback Gorilla is, as well as be under investigation by CPS for improper supervision.  Just my .02.

Agreed with all this.

Been out of town and hadn't heard about this until just now.
