That was my guess.  Elliot's demeanor is really cool and calm and even. He is sort of like a cyborg.

ROUND
Zane Gonzalez
K
Arizona State
6-0
202
6-7
Can absolutely boom the ball, converting 7 of 9 kicks of more than 50 yards, with 75 percent of his kickoffs going for touchbacks. Connected on 96 of 110 career attempts, but half his games were in Arizona. Can he kick in Green Bay?
Jake Elliott
K
Memphis
5-9
167
7-FA
Tremendously accurate, hitting 78 percent of his field goal attempts. Deadly from in close, going 202 for 202 on PATs and never missing inside 31 yards. Broke Stephen Gostkowski’s school record with 445 points. Size is a concern.

They both look good - but, as this article says, Gonzalez had benefit of kicking in Arizona for most of his games.  Also, - as an aside - one of my college friends just told me via text that Elliott interned at her office in Memphis and that he is a really good guy.
Elliott will make it 55-yard kick and say "I'll be back"

On Elliott - the in-close near perfect percentage is now more important than ever with extra points moving farther out. There were a lot missed in the NFL last year.

Thanks man, made me feel much better about the pick. At first it was a headscratcher to me but this makes sense and i trust Simmons.
i mean he's the 2nd best rated kicker over the first. They obviously like him better its not like they took a no name guy.

You O line guys just can't let it go can you.  We knew for months they weren't drafting them until late if at all, but keep up your head up

He grew up in Illinois and is used to winter weather.  That coupled with his perfect rating at 31 yards or closer and NO extra point misses is key.  Plus he has the range to make 55-60 yard field goals and kicked the 4th longest field goal in bowl game history.
John Becksvoort is a friend of mine (former record holder TN kicker, cut by SF). He talked to me about the incredible focus he had to have as a kicker and how narrow the goal posts seems when you're lined up from 50+ yards.

If Elliot is as cool as he seems to be (and I would bet Simmons made sure of just that), won't it be refreshing that Marvin can let a kicker try an occasional long field goal, rather than punting in those situations every time?

you don't have to sell me.  You get a potential day 1 starter this year in the 5th round.  Competition at kicker is a big need for our team we need to be much more productive in arguably the most important position outside of quarterback.  Lets be real Kickers win or lose games.  I love the pick

I'm just happy they got a kicker so that I don't bite my nails down to the bone every time they line up for kick.  I literally had to leave the room and grab a beer when the Bengals kicker came out
