From 1999 to 2016, here is how the Bengals offensive drives have stacked up compared to the rest of the NFL.
I list the top 5 while also including our division. I'll also list the worst team for reference:
Top 5 in percentage of drives that ended in a score:
1. Patriots- 41.3%
2. Colts- 40.7%
3. Packers- 38.0%
4. Saints- 37.5%
5. Chargers- 36.1%
6. Steelers- 36.1%
15. Ravens- 32.7%
18. Bengals- 31.8%
32. Browns- 26.8%
Percentage of drives that ended with a turnover:
1. Patriots- 11.1%
2. Chiefs- 12.1%
3. Jaguars- 12.8%
4. 49ers- 12.8%
5. Seahawks- 13.2%
8. Ravens- 13.6%
11. Steelers- 13.6%
20. Bengals- 14.4%
32. Cardinals- 16.4%
Percentage of drives that ended with a punt:
1. Saints- 37.2%
2. Colts- 37.4%
3. Packers- 38.1%
4. Patriots- 38.3%
5. Chargers- 38.8%
7. Steelers- 39.7%
18. Bengals- 42.7%
27. Ravens- 43.7%
32. Browns- 46.6%
"Fun" facts: Our most time-consuming drive of the last 18 seasons was on 12/16/2001 in a 15-14 loss to the Jets. The drive was the 6th longest in the NFL over that span, lasting exactly 12 minutes and 20 plays, resulting in a 1 yard TD run by Dillon. It was the first drive of the game and lasted almost the entire 1st quarter.
The most plays in a drive came 2 years earlier on 12/26/1999 in a 22-0 loss to the Ravens and Marvin Lewis. The oh-so-Bengals drive went 21 plays for 94 yards and ended in a blocked FG. Why we were attempting a FG from 6 yards out in the 4th quarter, down 16-0 to a legendary defense is anyone's guess.
On defense...
Percentage of drives where defense allowed a score:
1. Ravens- 28.2%
2. Patriots- 28.9% (and people say Brady carries that team)
3. Steelers- 29.3%
4. Eagles- 30.1%
5. Bears- 31.5%
18. Bengals- 33.6%
29. Browns- 35.7%
32. Saints- 36.5%
Percentage of drives where defense forced a turnover:
1. Panthers- 16.1%
2. Patriots- 15.9% (is this team well coached or what? Top 3 in pretty much everything.)
3. Buccaneers- 15.8%
4. Packers- 15.7%
5. Ravens- 15.0%
11. Bengals- 14.5% (we've always been good here)
13. Steelers- 14.3%
27. Browns- 13.3%
32. Texans- 12.2%
Percentage of drives where defense forced a punt:
1. Ravens- 46.6%
2. Steelers- 45.6% (Yikes...our division rivals are 1-2, and there's a substantial gap between 2 and 3)
3. Eagles- 43.9%
4. Jets- 43.6%
5. Dolphins- 43.2%
20. Bengals- 41.4%
23. Browns- 40.9%
32. Saints- 39.3%

This just proves what nearly everyone always said...Bengals are in the 15-20 range in terms of how good they are. On the cusp of making the playoffs to one-and-done.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.
Sorry for Party Rocking!

Meh, I bet if you changed the starting date to ~2004-2005 all of those statistics would improve a lot. Excluding last year I would bet that we ranked pretty high in the Dalton era.

Yeah, I don't understand why you would go back to 1999?
Can you do the stats for the Palmer Era and Dalton Era then for the Lewis Era?
I think that would be interesting.
Of course, I don't remember when Marvin Lewis started...wasn't it a couple years before drafting Carson Palmer? I do remember that Marvin Lewis first pick in the draft as an head coach was Levi Jones, I think anyway. I always second guess myself since the brain injury.

I didn't choose 1999. That's how long Pro Football Reference has been keeping track. There is no way to splice the stats, or I would just do the Marvin era. That said, Marvin started in 2003 (his first draft pick was Palmer), so this only includes 4 seasons before Marv and 14 seasons with him. So it's still mostly Marvin. I would also add that the last 18 years have included at least 4 down seasons for almost all teams outside of say the Patriots and Steelers.
Fwiw, this wasn't intended as a "bash Marv" thread. Just found the stats interesting and thought I'd share. Make of the stats what you will.

Those 4 years though were simply horrible. I'm certain they would have an impact on an 18 year span.
1999 4-12
2000 4-12
2001 6-10
2002 2-14 Worst record ever in Bengals history.

1999 is just as good a year as any to start. The Browns returned, and the Texans weren't far behind. Outside of realignment, the league hasn't changed much since then.
I'm gonna break every record they've got. I'm tellin' you right now. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, but it's goin' to get done.

TY for sharing, but pity the info is really not a true indication of our current team. A decade (10 years) is a better time frame or 5 years if we want to have a true discussion about a current franchise success or lack of it.
I would argue the Bengals fair much better if you look at last 5 or 10 years, not even close to eliminating the consistent 2 to 5 win teams back in 1999 to 2005.
I am so ready for 2024 season. I love pro football and hoping for a great Bengals year. Regardless, always remember it is a game and entertainment.

For this team the only thing that really matters is 2011 and onward.

Yep, and it gives us a good look at that "makeup" of the front offices. This is what this data tells me.

Again...You could take almost any team and they're going to have 4 years in an 18 year span where they were a 3 or 4 win team. Or worse.

It's more indicative of how The Bengals are mediocre under Marvin. They aren't bottom five or even ten. But there not that good either. All the stats are middle of the pack, which is why Cincinnati is always one and done come playoff time.

No, Marv turned this franchise around when he came here. Fun fact: we didn't win more than 8 games from 1991-2002, and only won less than 8 games 4 times unders Lewis 14 year tenure. big difference.

We've never really had a truly great offense or defense for a season under Marvin. Sure our offense and defense have been competent to good at times...but we've never really had a league dominant unit.

That 2005 Offense was pretty good with Palmer, Chad, Henry, TJ, Rudi, Kelly, that O Line was bad to the bone.
If Palmer wouldn't had gotten hurt there's no doubt in my mind that the Bengals would be Super Bowl Champs.

The 05 and 15 offenses were near unstoppable until QB injury came into play

Yeah, pretty much what I was gonna say. Both years looked like they could be THE years......we shall never know. Those two teams could play o with anyone in the league.
