CAN ANYBODY EXPLAIN

What happened to the Bengals defense? I sure can't understand how they became so bad since playing so well against Miami.

It's a perfect storm of predictable play-calling, veterans getting huge contracts and underperforming, absolutely horrible LB play, injuries, bad tackling, change of coordinators, etc.

Pretty much everything that could be wrong is wrong.

We look like a team in desperate need of an entire coaching staff change and rebuild of the roster.

My personal opinion....

We have no pass rush because we cannot cover the underneath routes, and therefore drop more players into coverage.

We cannot cover everything underneath because we have sub-par coverage LBs.. plus we get no rush.

Thus.... opposing QBs have too much time to find the open player, and by open I mean WIDE OPEN. And the dominoes crumble with all of this (run games open up, deep routes open up).

Decimated linebacking corp, situational pass rushers, and tackles.

Looking like they've just thrown up their hands, and walked away..

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

That's just it though. The defense was bad with Brown and Vigil too.

Not this bad though.

Remeber, the defense did actually win some games for us early this season when everyone was healthy...

Of course, that won’t happen, regardless of how the season ends.

With turnovers. It wasn't like they shut teams down.

The turnovers were kind of fluke.

See...I fear Bengals management will chock this season up to injuries and stay the course. That's devastating if they do.

Oh...we'll draft guys and hear spin stories of how great they are all year.

The truth is we're about 8 starters away.

Don't misunderstand what I was saying.

In no way am I implying they were in the top of the league, but with all the starters and key regulars healthy, we weren't giving up as many yards, could get to the QB more, and we could hold teams to three inside the red zone.  Back then the opposing punter was at least required to dress for the game.

Quite a far cry from the Preseason where it looked like we'd have a dominant defensive line, isn't it? Even at it's best, it underperformed.

Exactly ! They weren't stone walling anybody in those first 5 games.

We caught the Colts at the best time, and we had the ball literally fall into our laps vs Miami. I'm not saying we shouldn't have won either game, but the defense hasn't exactly been a whizzbang unit that just fell off the charts this year.

My favorite line of the day "Mayfield's patience" on having 12 seconds to throw a touchdown pass. Hilarious

We lost our 1 3 down LB and we lost an all pro caliber player in Lawson.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

We were averaging 7 yards per a pass with Vigil in there since he left we're averaging over 9 on defense. In the first 5 games we had one game with over 7 yards per an attempt since then there have been 6. So yes there has been a difference at least in the past defense.

Excuses. Excuses. Excuses.

The defense was bad with those guys. Maybe it got slightly worse losing them....but totally healthy, the defense had major issues.
