The final 53 let's take a look

With 11 DL, I'm seeing one or possibly 2 as trade bait for OL or LB..

Isn’t it amazing that we ended last season with a garbage line and mediocre linebackers, and were starting this year off in the same predicament. This team just doesn’t learn.

Well, if you haven't noticed, there are spots left open in both position groups, along with an excess in the DL group.  I'm thinking they are looking for a trade partner.

I mean if that’s their plan then they better be looking at a guy who has starting potential and not just some depth signing. I don’t see much of that out there on the streets today.

Agreed.  The way I see it, somewhere in the 31 other teams, there is one club that has an equally overstocked OL as the Bengals do DL.

It's just a matter of who calls who, so that the "upper hand" in the deal can be determined.

It's not like they drafted an OT and replaced both of our guards from last year or anything... they are at the very least *trying* to fix the offensive line.

It's not like they're the only team whiffing on collegiate linemen prospects who don't translate well to the NFL, either, because that problem seems to be coming more and more widespread.

It's a performance based league. Intent or trying don't really matter.

I still want to know how Jonah got hurt in OTA's where pads aren't worn.

Thinking they are going to make some trades for LB and O-line.

No way they go into the season with 4 Linebackers.

This is slowly morphing into Zac's team. Good to see many of Marv's players are gone. Let's hope they're able to make some more moves.

The O-Line was addressed by two draft picks, one being injured, the other is starting at LG.  They also signed Miller and Jerry.  They addressed the O-Line but not in a great way.  They ended up releasing Jerry but at least the guards are better, they are starting Hopkins over Price.   So yes, there have been issues addressed on the O-Line, just not finished product at this moment.

The backer position group is a concern.  They drafted Pratt which may have potential but hard to tell with limited sample size.  They are a thin group.  I will say the PB has looked quite good, he is young and if he stays healthy, more than adequate at MIKE.

The defense scheme has been changed to adapt to personnel deficits.  They will go base 4-2-5 or 5-1-5.  This will take load off backers.  The problem I will see occurring is that teams will continue to use TE on fade and crossing patterns which is so frustrating as a Bengal fan.

Is it possible the D-Line will go with Tupou and Wren on the field at the same time and move Geno to RE on some schemes?  I am still trying to figure out why two NT.  It would keep the backers clean from guards I would think.

I'm all in on this idea at the moment. Let's run out all kind of goofy formations and just say "screw it, we suck at linebacker, let's just not use them all that often". I'm really intrigued!

What are teams going to do, dump it off to TEs and RBs more than they already were when we were in our base defense?

Powering over us would be the strategy. Heck, a guy like Lawson is a good pass rusher, but bad against the run. Hubbard is a little better against the run.

But, our D-Line has shown it can be run on in the past. And Vigil and Brown aren't the fastest LB's.

That's my point - they were doing that to us already, and they'd do it to us if we put 6 of our LBs on the field. So kudos to them for potentially just conceding that fact and working to shore up other areas by putting extra linemen, safeties, or corners out there.

They are changing it up. Still expecting a trade or a move of some kind at LB especially.

Shawn and Fej are decent against the run. Pratt and Preston as well.

Vigil is getting better, same with Evans under Tem.

Lawson must be 5th LB, that is all I can think of that makes sense

I know ZT is in his honeymoon phase and could keep 4 QB's and some would love it, but 4 LB's and 4 safeties makes no sense to me

They may be thinking to play 3 CB and 2 Safeties with 2 LB and 4 DL. The 49ers won Super Bowls with an alignment resembling that. Essentially CB #3 is a “safety” schematically and Safety #2 is a “Linebacker” schematically. If you happen to have a thumper type of safety (which we do) the defense can also deal with power running.
