Cool Reds trivia question
#1
There are only 8 players in major league history with both 300 HRs and 300 SB.

One of them was a Red.

The two obvious guesses are wrong.

Never a big star.

Only made the All-star team once in 1995 when he hit .306 with 28 HR, 99 RBI, and 36 SB in only 484 at bats.  He finished 6th in MVP voting that year.

Played for several teams, but by far most of his career (8 seasons) was with the Reds.

Reggie Sanders just isn't a name that jumps out at you when considering good/great Reds players.

That was my guess . . . I was kind of lost until he said 1995 and then went Reggie Sanders.

His biggest problem in Cincinnati was that stupid "next Eric Davis" tag. Aside from the high strikeouts, he was a solid player and a good outfielder. Some guys can run, some guys can catch, he did both quite well.

Yep

And if memory serves he was pretty much a lunch pail type that didn't seek the limelight much.

I totally whiffed on that one. I didn’t know RS stole that many bases.

So if there are 8 players... to continue with Fred's thread, who are the other 7? Let's name them one at a time. I'll go 1st with Willie Mays.

I would have never guessed it myself.

I think most fans could get the top 3 pretty easy

Mays..............660 HR...338 SB
Barry Bonds....762 HR...514 SB
A Rod.............696 HR...329 SB

After that it gets tough.  I would have got one of the other five, but the other 4 are far from easy.  I would have never guessed Reggie Sanders.

Three guys I would have guessed that would have been wrong....Ricky Henderson (He only had 297 HR), Joe Morgan (268 HR), Cesar Cedeno (199 HR).  I remember Cedeno having a good bit of pop when he came into the league, and he hung around the majors a long time. I know his game tailed off but I thought he would have gotten way more than 199.  When I looked up his numbers he had 90 HR before he turned 24 and then just 109 over his final 11 seasons.

And...my 1st two guesses were wrong.  they were Honus Wagner...not near enough HR's.  And Dale Murphy..who I believe was a 30/30 guy but not near enough stolen bases.  Tough club to be part of for sure.

I loved Reggie. That is a very cool stat. I do remember the horrible playoff series against the Braves he had though.
I used to be jmccracky. Or Cracky for short.

Mantle screwed his knee up in 1951 and would most likely have made the list. ManY who got to see him run said that he was by far the fastest runner in the game. He probably could have hit 800 homers without all of the injuries too. Of course he’s not the only guy that injuries have limited but probably the biggest name and most talented.

Rep.  Dawson....438 HR....314 SB

The one I would have guessed correctly was Barry's dad Bobby Bonds (332 HR, 461 SB).  Seasons with 30 HR and 30 SB are pretty common now.  It has been done 47 times since 1990, but in 1978 there had only been ten 30/30 seasons in the history of MLB and Bobby Bonds had 5 of them.  At that time Willie Mays was the only other player with more than one and he only had two.  Among all players with at least 400 SB Barry Bonds is #1 in HR, and his dad Bobby is #2.  Little known fact, but I'd argue the most impressive father/son combo in professional sports history..  Archie Manning was a very good QB, but he did not win anything or put up a lot of records.

Reggie Smith had 305 HR and 304 SB

The other two are Carlos Beltran (435 HR, 312 SB) and Steve Finley (304 HR, 320 SB)
