Rodney Anderson failed Physical...waived
#21
I was so excited about his potential and he flashed the few carries he had last preseason. I thought for sure he’d come back just as strong. Then I read about how he couldn’t wait to kneel. He was dead to me that day. Good riddance.

The beast we signed from the XFL. Watched him for years at FSU and it takes more than one guy to tackle him.

Signed just before draft for 3yrs $2.28 million.

Rodney ran like he had a wheel loose. This doesn't surprise me. Still feel good about our RB depth.

That's a good call. It's unfortunate there weren't be any recent tape of them to go off.

Anderson was the Bengals 4th(?) pick in the 6th round that season. Unlike Walton, who wasted a 4th, late in the 6th is basically a glorified UDFA and Anderson was worth the roll of the dice.

I'm not trying to be a downer, but I can't figure out why people are so hyped up for this Patrick dude.

He had a terribly underwhelming career at FSU, depsite playing in the weaker ACC. His Sr. year he only rushed for 378 yards, and averaged a paltry 3.5 a carry. His career high in yards in a season was only 748. His totals averaged over 4 years was about 450 yards and 4 TD's. Didn't do a whole lot in the receiving game either, with only 47 career catches.

Now you might be thinking, well stats don't tell everything. There must be some great physical tools there, or maybe he was misused.

He wasn't even invited to the combine. A combine that invites 330 players. Needless to say, he went undrafted.

So now we've got a guy with weak college stats, from a weak conference, who wasn't invited to the combine, who went undrafted. Maybe he put up gaudy numbers in the XFL. Maybe that's what I'm missing. Maybe he was unbelieveable, and proved his doubters wrong.

He averaged 50 yards a game in the XFL with a pretty pedestrian 4.2 YPC with 2 TD's over 5 games. Those are the definition of average stats.

He's a big, slow running back. Am I missing something here?

If I am not mistaken, Perine was also on special teams a bit last year?

Doh! Probably why I didn't remember getting him.

Rex, Fej, Tate...it’s not like you can’t find good players in the 6th and 7th. Anyway I’m not killing them for taking him, it just sucks to get absolutely nothing out of any draft pick.

Since I follow FSU, I can tell you why his stats weren't great. He shared the backfield with Dalvin Cook and Cam Akers, he was never the #1 back. He was the power back and that's the role I'm excited about for him here. I don't expect him to take the job from Mixon and go off for 1,000 yards a year. I expect he can give Mixon a breather from time to time and be the guy that gets the ball on the goaline or 3rd and 1 situations. He is also a very good pass protector, doesn't fumble, team leader and never gets out worked. These are my observations from his college years, did not watch any XFL.
He would give us a very diverse and balanced backfield; Mixon all around back, Gio the jitter bug third down specialist and Patrick the truck that will run a ************ over.

Can he lead block?  It'd be nice to see some 2 RB sets every now and then.

Good insight. Seems similar to Perine. Looks like that will be the battle for RB 4; as Trayveon Williams will be RB#3 barring injury

Love it Yo. I watched Patrick in the XFL and he impressed me. Like you said, he will truck defenders like nobody's bidness.

He would be one the field with Cook/Akers on occasion, but it wasn’t to block.

Yeah, Patrick is a goal line/short distance badazz. That be his job.

But he does have good hands from what I saw in the XFL.

The thing is, you can't just roll out the big banger on short yardage situations only, then it becomes an immediate tip that "hey, we're running up the gut".  You have to have a set of plays that can benefit from him being on the field.  If he can also lead block well, it opens up an array of plays;  Everything from him taking it straight up the middle, to lead blocking, to pass blocking and setting up the feature back for a pass, to a straight up max pro on a deep route to a gifted WR that might be alone in single coverage.

He can pass block, no problem putting him in those short yardage situations and then running play action.

See, I hate the idea of "package" players, as they are direct tips to the defense as to what you're going to do, based simply upon personnel on the field.

Why not also bring him in on occasion in 11 personnel, and let him gash the defense for 4 yards/play, ala Cedric Benson?

I agree and would like to see him spelling Mixon and Gio as much as possible, but that’s just the Nole fan in me. He is a limited RB and that’s why he’s 3rd or 4th string and not a starter. Just found a nice little scouting report video of some of his strength and weaknesses as a runner. Doesn’t touch on any of his blocking or catching abilities.

And a little story with a clip of him just after his pro-day:
