Maybe, just maybe, there was a reason he was 52-53 years old when he finally got his first shot at being an actual NFL DC and had been a career-long DB Coach before then.

The offense does the D no favors. with stupid 4th down decisions. the defense won our previous 2 games. D played well enough to win against the pats. Even against Ravens D put offense in a great position to win the game

Lou's inability to draft and develop is a much bigger issue than scheme. Like most Defensive Coordinators Lou has alot of say in how the draft board is stacked and in his tenure in Cincy thr team has stacked a defensive heavy board that has failed miserably.

Well with the lack of scouts here, the coaches are a massive part of the scouting and free agent acquisitions.

Ossai and Murphy are killing this d-line. Poor drafting or poor development from coaching. Either way, its those kinds of busts that kill teams. A Jake Fisher and Ogbuehi situation

I like Jenkins he’s played pretty well against the run which was his strength coming out. Not expecting him to be much of a rusher plus he’s also playing with a club.

It became glaringly obvious to me watching both Murphy and Hill chasing Daniel Jones on the same play. Murphy looked like he was in slo-mo, while bigger, heavier BJ Hill looked like he was in fast-forward.

FIVE YEARS out of six. This is not just a 2024 issue.

The defense "won" our previous 2 games against Daniel Jones and Deshaun Watson but still have the 23rd scoring defense despite that. They played "well enough" to win against Jacoby Brisett (but not really because they gave up 170 yards of rushing against them). Congrats, you can beat up on invalids.

The defense gave up 348 passing yards and 4 TDs to Lamar Jackson while also giving up 175 rushing yards. They did NOT put them in a "great position" to win the game. I don't know when 520 yards of offense and 41 points became "great". In the 3rd and 4th quarter the Ravens had 4 drives and they got TD, TD, TD, FG. Couldn't even get 1 stop in the second half.

I get it but the bengals offense wasnt doing the carrying in the 21 and 22 playoffs. I give Lou more leeway than you

They forced a TO in OT in scoring position if that's not putting team in position to win the game I don't know what to tell you.

In 2021, the Bengals don't even make the playoffs with the 17th scoring defense if they don't have the 7th scoring offense.
In 2022 the defense was good. That's the 1 out of 6 years.

If someone is bad at their job 4.8/6 years, you don't have to wonder if it's the work environment or the equipment they are using, they're probably just bad at their job.

Not to mention no one wanted to hire him as a HC despite his defense supposedly “carrying” the team during two straight deep playoff runs.

Make a SINGLE stop in the second half rather than giving up 24 points on 4 drives and it doesn't go into OT.

ok but I was referring to the playoff runs.

Yes, and I agree on the playoff runs... but as we've seen last year and this year, in order to have a playoff run you need to REACH the playoffs, and you can't do that with a trash tier defense. A thing that this team keeps overlooking when they built their team to beat the Chiefs and Bills, but can't beat their own division unless we play their backup QBs (and even then only sometimes).

RE: CAPTAIN OBVIOUS HERE BUT NONE THE LESS - Wyche'sWarrior - 10-28-2024

When you think back, Duke Tobin essentially got Merv ran out of town with Ogbuehi/Fisher/Ross/WillJax3.(not that it wasn't time, but still....) Now he's still shitting the bed and to top it off, letting the few talented picks he made leave town. Fire this guy....and let him take his slide machine and three scouts with him.

5th choice for DC at that...

Duke really is horrendous at his job. This is a side tangent, but one thing I dont get is they supposedly dont value linebackers, but they re-sign all 3 guys(pratt, wilson, davis-gaither). And none of those 3 are game changers. Yea, Wilson is the best of the bunch, and I get re-signing him, but it just feels like linebackers can be replaced. It's not a premium position.

There was no need to re-sign BOTH davis-gaither and also Pratt, when that money couldve been used to retain or sign somebody who is more impactful

and those Murphy/ossai picks, along with trying to replace boyd and higgins with Charlie Jones and Yoshi is straight up killing the team

Never going to happen. He’s basically a family member.

I know it....and it's a big problem IMO. I was looking back through drafts toward the end of Marvin's tenure, and into this one. They've had some hits and some misses like any other team. The misses have been HUGE though. That 2015 draft was a dumpster fire. They followed that up with John Ross, then WJIII in successive first rounds. This year's draft looks ok right now, but the last few have been very mediocre. Then you couple that with letting what little talent you do develop walk.

Position coaches could be an issue. The soft camps could be an issue. The entire staff could be an issue. That said, when I look at these drafts, letting good players leave without compensation, not making trades to fix obvious in season holes, and the whole ridiculous and pathetic scouting department.... I'm looking at the front office.

I won't either, but his defense was not very good last year.
