RE: Potential DCs in 2021? - samhain - 11-25-2020 I want someone respectable with experience building known good defenses. Dean Pees is my first choice, and he apparently wants to un-retire. Not sure this team has a group he'd do that for if he had better offers, but that's who I want. Wade Phillips is the other, and he also wants to get back into the league. His benefit is that he's not only a great coordinator but also a guy that has been a HC running locker rooms. If Zac is to stay, he needs a respectable 2nd in command to help him out with the ins and outs of being a HC in the league. He has no one like that now. Pees would be amazing but I would be shocked if we were the type of team/situation to bring him our of retirement. I don't think our defensive players are that much different than what Tennessee had though. But Anarumo is more likely gone. And because I prefer to use this board to talk about solutions (rather than just griping all the time), I wanted to start a thread on possible DC candidates.Kerry Coobs would be a demanding coach ala Zimmer. As far as communication issues he's a successful DC a a major D1 school. He's obviously doing something right... Wade Phillips wouldn’t lower himself to come to Cincinnati. Dean Pees isn't just a name, it's a sentence. These are all really good points. RE: Who should be the next DC? - Tiger Teeth - 11-26-2020 With MB running the show, does it really matter? Most of Belicheck's coaching tree doesn't have success at the HC level, but he had a hell of a defense in New England. Sounds trite, but I don't think his bearded hoodie look jives well with what the Brown's want for their coaches, though. I may be an optimist, but I'd lean towards the last part. Nfl coaching positions are limited. New guys take what they can get; an experienced coach could see the opportunity to move into the driver's seat. I'd look at it a different way. The DC is in a no-lose situation if he can make a positive impact. If Zac turns things around (and with Burrow at QB this is a realistic prospect), the Bengals become a hot team and with that comes opportunities. If Zac doesn't turn it around he's out and an up and coming DC will have the inside line on the HC position. Whilst there are lots of holes on that D there is also some talent to work with. You'll have the best safety in the League to work with. You'll have DJ Reader returning up front. That's two elite players. Sam Hubbard and Logan Wilson look like two young cornerstones. Maybe they re-sign one or both of WJIII and Lawson. With the franchise QB in place on a cheap rookie deal, Tee Higgins and Boyd at WR, Mixon at RB, Jonah Williams at LT you've got a lot of the offensive pieces in place meaning the draft and free agency focus can be on D. OK, they'll probably take Sewell but after that you should get some decent picks to work with: the 35th and 67th picks this year, probably the first rounder the year after. This is a much more attractive proposition than the job would have been a year or two ago. And that's why I wouldn't even consider him. The guy has, "retired," twice already and wants to come back again? So he can retire 2 years later again? **** him. RE: Who should be the next DC? - Nicomo Cosca - 11-27-2020 I see Watson hung 41 on Matt Patrica’s Lions last night. Yikes. RE: Who should be the next DC? - bengaloo - 11-27-2020 Jack Del Rio....oh wait, nevermind. |
