It is a big jump from college, the same as any position. You are on a much bigger stage, even if Robbins played at a big college.

Every rookie player usually has trouble making the jump, not making excuses for Robbins, just saying he could improve like Huber did.

I do want competition at the Punter position in the offseason, I just think it is a bad time to make a change while we still have a chance
at making the Playoffs. As the numbers show, Robbins doesn't allow Returns, unlike Chrisman who allowed a big return in the AFCC that
helped lead to our demise in the biggest of moments.

One thing I did notice the last two games is that he adjusted very well to snaps from our LS that were close to being flubs. Robbins had to twist and reach to his right pretty far and then twist left and place it perfectly for Evan. More than one attempt too. That's on the LS. That easily throws the timing off for when Evan has started his move to the ball. Robbins did well in getting those snaps down quick for Evan.
I've seen this too, nice spot! He does do the little things well. I just wish he'd find that "happy medium" mixing distance and hang time with his punts. I've seen him boom a few, so I know he's got the leg. Hope they bring in a higher-quality UDFA this upcoming post-draft to push him.

He did admit to having sex with the 17-year-old. Since he was 21, it could have been considered statutory rape, but  it is not statutory rape if he reasonably believed she was 18 or older at the time, and apparently there is one witness who testified that she said at the party she was 18, as well as video from another party where she said she was 18. She did had voluntary sex with other men as well that night, which was on video, but Araiza wasn't in the house at the time she said she was raped by several men. Her point was she was drunk and couldn't consent. I cringed at this part: "one of the videos appeared to show her braces cutting one of the men during oral sex, possibly explaining the blood." one of the men with the video is being charged with child pornography, since she was 17.

Here is a very thorough account:

I would be on phone ASAP with his agent. Imagine the difference having a guy like this punting VS weenie leg we have now

RE: We need a new punter - ochocincos - 12-13-2023

I get why the Bengals wanted a new punter, but it seemed silly going after someone who really only had good hangtime but bad distance.
Maybe they thought the distance thing was only because of where they were on the field.

At this point, I think just look to get a new one in the offseason.
Talk with Araiza to make sure character is good. Yes, I know the charges were dropped and everything surrounding that, but you still need to get confidence he'll never put himself in an off-field situation like that again.
Look at punters in this upcoming draft as well to see if you can find someone who both has a leg and hangtime. It's ok to spend a 6th or 7th rounder on a punter since those rounds for O/D are typically just for backup guys anyway.

RE: We need a new punter - wildcatnku24 - 12-13-2023

Perhaps the idea is that we get a punter that has great hangtime and teach him the power aspect in terms of distance? The weird thing to me is it has to take power to kick the ball up high, thus longer hangtime. Perhaps it's simply the angle of attack he needs to learn? I dunno, I have to imagine this is teachable. The thing I'd prefer not happen is the jake elliot scenario, though of course we're farther along, but for examples sake, I simply mean giving up on someone that definitely has a place in the NFL. granted, I like Money Mac so I'm not bitter about Elliot now, but the Eagles sure loved taking Elliot.... Another team probably happily takes this punter.

I say give him more than his rookie year.

(12-13-2023, 03:28 PM)KillerGoose Wrote: EPA stands for expected points added. It's just a game-state calculation based on time remaining and field position. If you're calculating it for offensive players, you include the down and distance, too. An example would be if the Bengals had 1st and 10 from their own 40, they may have an expected points of one point. This is based on historical data giving ratios of scoring with that specific game state. Now, let's say Joe Mixon rips off a 60 yard touchdown, scoring six points. The Bengals were expected to score one point, Joe scored six, so Joe's expected points added (EPA) is five points for that play. If the Bengals had first and goal, their expected points may be 5.9. Once Joe scores, he has scored six points and added 0.1 expected points. It's a valuable metric for figuring out the value added by the individual players or which teams are consistently producing the most value.

Once you have the total, you can then turn it into an efficiency metric by dividing it by the amount of attempts a player has. So, the chart is saying that, on average, Robbins' punts are costing Cincinnati -.2 points. Put differently, Robbins' punts and their subsequent returns are putting Cincinnati at a very slight disadvantage.

Ok, thank you for explaining it.

For the record, Robbins is indeed a rookie- a 25 year old rookie.  Seems any necessary additional leg strength should have been acquired by now.

RE: We need a new punter - Destro - 12-14-2023

We have New Punter at home.

The punt game is fine. He’s a rookie and he’s got the 3rd best return average in nfl.

Some of yall would shit your pants if you saw Hubers rookie stats

This guy blows he has low return yards because the coverage team has to make up hardly any ground on the ball. Not to mention he cant do the one thing he was supposed to be good at in college with pinning inside the 20. The dude just simply cannot change the field position.

Some people won't see it, no matter what reality is.

RE: We need a new punter - jj22 - 01-03-2024

He did catch and hold (Adomitis’s wayward snaps) good for Mostly Money.

His operation looked crisper than under Chrisman…..

RE: We need a new punter - 007BengalsFan - 01-04-2024

Robbins had one punt where he tried to drive it but he out kicked his coverage which gave K.C. a big return. That punt had a net of 26 yards. Those kinds of things just kill the team. Wasnt Chrisman eventually let go because of he did that against K.C. last year? Robbins is no better than Chrisman

Another punt Robbins kicked into the endzone but for whatever reason the K.C. return guy had a brain fart and tried to run it out. We are lucky not to have a 30 yard net punt on that play. I think Robbins will end up doing better next year because it would be hard for him to do worse but Im just not a fan of him back there as the punter.

We dont need a punter with a strong leg, the offense is so good and talented they will make it to midfield before we ever need to punt.  Its better to have someone that will punt it 30-40 yards.   Ninja

RE: We need a new punter - Sled21 - 01-04-2024

I'm always for punter competition. But talking about Araiza, I think there is more to the story or some other team would have already picked him up.

SO he walks out and booms a 65 yarder and we will all forget everything...LOL
Seriously, he has been exonerated from what Ive read : agreed its strange no one has brought him in at least for a workout.
Bengals having the WORST punter in league should at minimum vet him out..

We need a new punter - The D.O.Z. - 01-04-2024

In regards to Araiza and why he hasn't been tried-out by other teams after being exonerated: sadly there is also a "court of public opinion" he has to convince as well. It sucks, but that's how things are and have been for as long as I can remember.

Yup. If he was a talented QB or WR, someone may take a flier on him, but being a punter, the PR nightmare a bunch a cranky pants would bring to the team, makes it not worth it. It's a thing where, if innocent, he needs all the support in the world. if guilty, he should be put into a wood chipper. Pretty extreme and some people will never come off of him, regardless of what the outcome of these charges were.

RE: We need a new punter - Bengal Dude - 01-05-2024

I don't see the Bengals drafting a punter next year, unless they make some trades and acquire a lot more picks, but I think we'll be signing one after the draft and letting him battle with Robbins for the job next year.

I think it was his last punt where he was told to kick it out of bounds but he didn't. I think I remember someone asking Zac post game about that punt and his answer was something like he was going to talk to (either drue or the ST coach) about that, maybe indicating that was unexpected.
