26. CINCINNATI BENGALS (UP 6)
Projected Week 6 Starters:
LT Jonah Williams
LG Cordell Volson
C Ted Karras
RG Alex Cappa
RT La’el Collins
Cincinnati’s line was far better this week than in previous outings this season. Nobody on the line allowed more than one pressure against Baltimore.
Run blocking remains an issue, but if their pass protection continues on this trajectory, the team will consider that a major win.
Upcoming Opponent: New Orleans Saints
The Saints have elite talent up front, but it’s not playing up to that level in 2022. The team ranks fourth-worst in pressure rate and blitzes at the third-lowest rate.
Romo “ so impressed with Zac ...1 of the best in the NFL… they are just fundamentally sound. Taylor the best winning % in the Playoffs of current coaches. Joe Burrow” Zac is the best head coach in the NFL & that gives me a lot of confidence." Taylor led the Bengals to their first playoff win since 1990, ending the longest active drought in the four major North American sports, en and appeared in Super Bowl LVI, the first since 1988.

You can talk all you want about Taylor/Callihan & Joey Franchise but anybody think if it was around 12 we’d be undefeated?

The starting OL's cumulative grades through 5 weeks (rank among position):
Jonah - 58.9 (59th of 72 OTs)
Volson - 49.5 (59th of 75 OGs)
Karras - 60.0 (18th of 38 OCs)
Cappa - 64.0 (25th of 75 OGs)
Collins - 53.2 (65th of 72 OTs)
So out of the group, Karras and Cappa are still sitting at "solid," Jonah and Collins are starter-level, and Volson is bad through the season so far.
This is based on the rating of:
80+ = elite
70-79 = good
60-69 = solid
50-59 = starter-level
49 or less = bad
This obviously means they might currently be better than what their cumulative grade indicates, but their bad performances early in the season are affecting their cumulative grade.
If they continue to improve as the season goes, their cumulative grade will go up too.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.
Sorry for Party Rocking!

Better play calling would make the line look better too. It's amazing how effective they were in the run game out of shotgun when the defense didn't expect it.

Truth. We are clearly getting better, one of these games it will all come together. Hope it is Sunday in New Orleans.
Should be a fun game for Burreaux going back to the place he had so much success in college.

I hope to see them get it together against a great defense on Sunday. Put up 30 and we'll be able to rest easy. If they continue to struggle like against the Cowboys, Steelers, and Ravens, its' hard to say how good we'll be this year.

You're right, better play calling makes the whole offense look better (coordinators included).

It's a blend of factors that include play calling. What enables play calling to be effective? Flawless execution.
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

Well #26 is #26. Yet they lost all 3 games at the very end of regulation. It’s a clear 4K Ultra HD resolution of the issues they are dealing with. It has to be totally frustrating for these guys.

This is my thoughts exactly. If the run game could be ranked middle of the pack we would be sitting 4-1. If the run game we’re more consistent Zac Taylor might consider running at least one rush play from the 2 yard line at first and goal. Oddly enough his decision not to run was on a night where the run game was working especially in the 2nd half. Just a real head scratcher all around.

We changed to a run gap scheme the majority of the plays instead of wide zone.
Vs Ravens:
Gap = 6.6 yds per carry
WZ = 2.7 yds per carry (close to Mixon's average)

Unfortunately we have posters that don't watch things like this. 1 guy out of the 11 can screw up a play in which everybody wants ZT's head on a platter. Be it a G not getting to the 2nd level, a T not sliding inside, a TE missing a chip or a WR not cracking down on a block.

The line was also just fine against Miami and even against the Jets it did its job mostly. Can't trust PFF ratings - remember they got taken to task even by normal PFF defenders are Jake Liscow in the sportswriter world over their Miami game scores - seems they listened a bit.

In pass protection. Against the Ravens was the only time we could run.

We also ran against the Jets. And interestingly it was using the same run scheme they used against the Rats.

And that was on a 15/3 gap/zone ratio. They had been splitting it mostly down the middle with a slight edge going to zone up until this past Sunday.

Right
The Oline has had many bad plays, there's little doubt. But there's a lot of other stuff that hasn't went well either including play calling/game plans.
Joe Burrow has had several bad series. Joe Mixon has been in his funk. Chase has had off games.
Bottom line the offense has been way underachieving all the way around. It's not just the Oline.

Run blocking "remains an issue'. Can't even show any love for the much improved numbers we saw with our own eyes.
