Bengals add Zach Gentry
#1
Surprised there wasn't a thread on this...

TE - Zach Gentry from the Steelers added to the Bengals practice squad.

I personally like the pick up!

Gross, a Steeler.

Aside from that I like him more than Wilcox, though.

Meh. Another practice squad body. If he has any intel on the Steelers he might be worth a paycheck.

Our last Steeler pick up was pretty good Wink

I've always said the Bengals should steal a Steelers player every so often.

I think we all assumed that.

There wasnt a dedicated thread but it was mentioned in the 2023 In-Season Roster Thread

In any event, it just seems like a wasted practice squad spot.  I would have rather taken a gamble on Kendric Pryor being able to do something or perhaps had signed Ben Brown before the Seahawks picked him up.  Now Brown is on the Seahawks active roster.

They needed the second TE on the practice squad for the scout team. Most of the AFC North besides the Bengals run 12 personnel groups. He's also a solid blocking TE just doesn't offer much as a receiver.

What I've seen written on him is he is a good blocker first and foremost. Do ex-Steelers get a heavy delousing before they're allowed in the locker room? [emoji848]

An added bonus of Gentry is that he was recruited to college as a QB.

I can see him making the 53 pretty soon.

Definitely insurance for Sample and Wilcox.

No such thing as a, "wasted PS spot," when the PS is now 90 million players.

And Pryor? Really? Quit living in the past, man ...

Steeler Intel:

A) Use the crown of your helmet when tackling.
B) There is no such thing as a late hit.
C) Run ball with Harris
D) Through ball to TE so fans can go "Heathhhhhhhhhhhhhh" even though his name isn't heath.
E) Sometimes through the ball deep to Pickens if Pickett can manage to throw it that far.
F) Never fear, the calls will come and the team will still finish above .500

There you go, and I was never a player. :)

Not sure why anyone would be excited about this move.

Dude is extremely pedestrian.
Runs a 4.9.
It's reflected in his paltry career 7.8 YPR.
Did horrible in every single athletic drill at the Combine.

Gentry is much more equipped to block. He's not much of a dynamic receiving threat.

I'm far more excited about Tanner Hudson as a potential call-up.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Hudson is the backup to Irv Smith Jr.  Gentry will be the backup to Sample.

Noting exciting about it but provides further depth.

Blocking TEs are often overlooked, but a good one can really help you out, especially in the run game. Go look back at some old Reggie Kelley video to see how helpful it can be.

Not the most dynamic player, for sure.  However, with that 6'8" frame and 80% catch to target ratio, he could prove to be incredibly valuable in situational use as a blocker or receiver.
