Joe is like this the first couple of games EVERY year. This shouldn't be shocking to you guys. He was uncomfortable in the pocket, dropping his eyes, and was sped up. The same shit happens every year. This is nothing new.
It'll be fine. He'll get more comfortable and confident each week. There were a TON of QBs who were bad yesterday. It's week 1. Lets all just take a deep breath, give it a couple more games. The boys are just talkin' ball, babyyyy

Both Joe and Zac are just slow starters.

He had single high, no pressure, with Yoshi and Chase streaking down field one on one. He also had a target open intermediate in a hole in the zone. To make matters worse, an outlet was wide open to his left in the flat. Instead of seeing those, he ducked his head to phantom pressure and threw to the outlet to his right with defenders closing. Result was a punt. I also saw numbers that said he had, on average, around 3.5 seconds to throw, and was pressured at a rate that was the third lowest of his career. Something was off with Joe. Hoping it's just rust. Me too. He looked flustered. Not the look I'm used to with him. Hope he shakes it off.

Like Weezy says, Joe has looked different in early games and it seems to take him a bit to get into a groove.

Crazy to think in the very near future our best 5 could very well be:
OBJ - Volson - Lee - Karras - Mims

Something tells me the game plan was for Joe to run more than he did Pats kept a spy on him and surprised Burrow and Zac. Yes, he did look much better actually....but he still looked off. I think he looked better because he had more time this off-season putting in work. He was dreadful against Pitt too. You may be right about the plan there, hadn't thought of it, and it's an interesting theory. Joe's numbers in September are bad for his career, for whatever that's worth. And if Andy Reid can play Mahomes in multiple preseason games I don’t see why so many other coaches aren’t willing to do it.

One of the lone bright spots on defense in that game.

It's definitely a recurring theme with Joe ....and he's been injured, appendix, COVID, so it's not black and white. Is that the reason for his slow starts, or is it just the way he operates? If he can't stay healthy one full year, we may never know. It seems there are variations across the league on how teams approach the preseason. I must admit I was shocked to find Detroit, with Dan Campbell's reputation, was a team that didn't play starters. McVay used to not play them, but did this year. The thing that was wild about Sunday was Joe wasn't his usual super diagnostic self. What I mean about effecting the entire team is the offense is built around him, and runs through him. I think the defense is built to play with a lead too. He's that critical to the Bengals success. "Better send those refunds..."

Get off to a slow start and everyone complains you didn't play your starters enough in preseason. Get a guy injured and you're a dumbass for risking your starters in preseason.

Maybe we can skip Burrow's slow starts by starting Browning the first 3 games every year. It's like a reverse relief pitcher, you're here to start us off right and you get 3 hyper focused games to do it. Imagine us being 3-0 to start lol

But in this case it's really not because ZT is now 1-10 in the 2 games in his 5 plus seasons as a HC so something has to change.Either that or more hitting in practice as Pratt even said after the game they don't tackle in practice.

How much of that is dictated by the NFLPA rules though? I agree they should be tackling in practice, I'm just not sure they are allowed to do much more than they do.

You may be right regarding the practice agenda but I have to believe a team can control how they practice for the most part including amping up the hitting.I've read accounts before how players talk about how practices one season were far more extreme than others. |
