Fields an upgrade for Steelers

(10-03-2024, 09:48 AM)GMDino Wrote: That is all Tomlin.  I've said it for years that he is so afraid of turnovers that he wants the team to play ultra-conservative.

He leaves no room for error.  And I've also said that because of that, since no team plays perfect every week, he sets the team up for failure.  Not every bounce/call will go your way every week and you have to be ready to overcome that.

When he had Ben and AB and other stars they could extend plays and make things happen to overcome bad play calling.  I truly believe Tomlin doesn't like that at all.

Last week the offense didn't change strategy until the second half because he wants the defense to win the game.

He even said they didn't prepare for Flacco and that was a problem.  They were trying to stay in a zone to confuse Richardson.

Well Richardson was carving them up and you have the highest paid D in the league...they should be open to change during the game.

Under MT the Steelers will never be a high scoring team again.

Bold decision when facing a QB who has now only finished 4 of the 8 games he's started and missed another 13.

Tomlin, IMHO, is not a good at preparing his team for the team they are playing.  I think his emphasis is on fundamentals and how HIS team will play and then figuring he has enough good players to overcome the rest.

Then you see the number of dumb penalties and wonder if he's even doing that.

I liked the hire.  I defended him against the racist "he only got hired because of the Rooney Rule" nonsense.  But he seeming inabilty to change his philosophy to match the changes in the league are frustrating.

Sometimes even great coaches go stale.  And Tomlin was never a "great" coach.  Sure fire HOFer due to longevity and that whole "never had a losing season" thing.  But his lack of playoff success will haunt Steelers fans.

Indeed.  Good thing Denver is the team paying him.

We'll give you 4 of our points per game on offense (we'll still have the 12th scoring offense) if you'll take 6 of our points per game on defense (you'll still have the 10th scoring defense). Lol

We'd be 4-0-1 and you'd be 5-0.

Unprepared.  Sloppy play.  Stupid penalties.

BUT...they will win more than they lose!  So Yay?

I actually asked when the Steelers game started with those called QB runs if the game plan was to get Fields hurt so Tomlin could start Wilson without any controversy!   Smirk

You just can't expect the defense to do more than they did against the Cowboys.  The offense has to improve.  But we haven't seen a Tomlin team (without Ben) that improves from week to week.  We see the same thing over and over.

Well I read that Wilson is near ready to play. What are they going to do, put him in or stick with Fields?

Tomlin: You know, we didn't play Steeler football today. Because if we would have truly played Steeler football, we would have won that game. Our offense put up a whole 17 points today, they scored two touchdowns, and then added a FG for good measure.  What did we do to reward the offense for their efforts? We gave up 20 damn points to the Dallas f***ing Cowboys! We gave them the game, y'all should be ashamed of yourselves for wearing the gold and black today.  Mellow

I said all along Wilson would be QB1 as soon as he was healthy.  Tomlin promised him that.

Luckily for Tomlin they lost two games so he can make the switch for a "spark".  I don't blame Fields exclusively for those losses but it's a convenient excuse for MT.

If Steelers lose to Raiders team coming into the year looking like a subpar team plus now they are out their top 2 WRS plus going with a different QB, i think a high chance Watson starting next game... or at the least two headed QB, mixing Fields in there with Watson

After that Raiders game I don't think MT can make the switch yet.  Wilson will get killed behind that line and Fields is their entire Redzone offense right now.

With the garbage he had to deal with Tomlin is far better than Cowher.

Unfortunately, with them playing the Giants next week, I see them 6 - 2 in first place next week.

Wilson played better than I anticipated. I know it was just against the J-E-T-S, but I assume Tomlin is happy and rolling with Russ for the immediate future.

Jets have a good defense, Wilson after he shock off the rust, was impressive, with Steelers defense and if Wilson can continue to click especially with Pickens, Bengals are behind the eight ball with both Ravens and Steelers

You were already behind the eight ball solely with respect to the standings, but it may be even harder to get out from behind it now.

I was talking with my brother about this today.  The JETS D was not at 100%, which gives some reason to tone down excitement over this performance, but by the same token, they’ve struggled against average to below-average defenses in the recent past, so it was nice to see them dominate a team they should have dominated.
