Bengals looking at Hendrickson extension

I still think that they need to draft another quality DT to keep the shelf young and full for a few years.

No doubt. Bringing BJ back is a no brainer as is extending Ja'Marr and Trey. The question is still Tee IMO.

We need to at least Tag Tee so we can get something for him in a trade at the very least.

BJ doesn't need to be a "great" player, he just needs to keep being himself. His numbers would have likely been better had there been anyone else getting push besides Trey. Second thing is; BJ's market value is listed as $9M on Spotrac, who are you going to get for the same or less that is going to be any better? I think that the team still needs to draft another high level DT and keep Hill around to keep the young guys grounded and pointed in the right direction. Hill plays with fire, he runs hard every down, he leads by example.

I would spend more money on a DT than 9 million. The 3t is the most important position on defense and hoping a career average player + A rookie can fill that job is begging for failure next season.

I don't agree with that statement. In fact, I would argue that in many cases 3Ts gather stats due to having a massive NT next to him drawing DTs on every down, and a pair of DEs that are getting around the edge and pushing the QB back to the 3T.

Hubbard appears to be washed, Murphy is slower than molasses in pursuit, this team needs another DE. I'm not screaming for NT because I feel like Jackson is going to work out, but he'll still need someone to rotate with. A team needs a complete DL, not just a 3T.

Tee and his agent would be tampering (as would the team they are talking with) and face huge consequences. Agent could his job and other team could lose draft picks and be fined.

You guys need to study up on how the franchise tag works.  The Bengals tendered Tee a non exclusive franchise tag.  This means Tee and his agent could negotiate with any team he wanted and he could have agreed to a deal with any team he wanted.  This is not tampering nor do you lose draft picks or get fined.  This is part of the NFL rules regarding free agents being franchise tagged.  Once Tee agreed to a deal with his new team, the Bengals would have the option to match the offer or receive compensation in the form of 2 first round draft picks.  Again, Tee being franchise tagged DOES NOT prevent Tee and his agent from seeking, negotiating and agreeing to a contract with another team.  Tee and his agent could have contacted every other NFL team and worked out a deal and absolutely nothing in the NFL rules prevent this.

Are you sure about that? Because if that were the case, then Mughaleta would have definitely found a team with deep pockets.

007 is correct, they used the non-exclusive on him.

Quote:The Bengals used their non-exclusive franchise tag on Higgins on Feb. 26. Higgins battled through injury during the 2023 season and recorded a career-low 42 catches, 656 yards and five touchdowns. He's set to earn $21.8 million in 2024.

I belive the big hurdle for teams interested in a player on the non-exclusive tag isn't so much the price tag dollar value but the loss of 2 first round picks.  I think it's actually rather rare for teams to use the exclusive tag.  As you can see from the link above no teams used the exclusive tag last year.

Steelers Cameron Heyward,  Ravens Nnamdi Madubuike , Bills Ed Oliver, Broncos Zach Allen, Chiefs Chris Jones, Lions Alim Mcneil,  Rams Kobe Turner,  Bucaneers Calijah  Kancey, Eagles Jalen Carter. 9 out of the 14 playoff teams had a 3T that was top 20 in pressures according to pff.

Extending Trey is paramount, let's see what the front office does. Only other players on defense I would try to sign is Hill and possibly Hilton. Due to a couple of draft picks that haven't worked out, the F.O. may try to keep Hubbard around and extend Higgins. If Murphy would've worked out, Hubbard would be an easy cut. If Burton wasn't a complete knucklehead, letting Tee go would be an easier pill to swallow. Have to see how it shakes out and on top of it all, is the county and the Bengals trying to get a lease extension done.

Thank you, George. I had forgotten all about the 2 first round picks part of the clause. For some reason I get the exclusive and non-exclusive mixed up. I guess I'm just getting to be an old man starting to get some things mixed up..

Dude, don't count 3-4 DEs as 3Ts. Those are different positions with different responsibilities from play to play.

It's easy to mix up.  I made the same mistake last year when discussing it.  That's how I remembered it this year.  :)

The whole NFL base is a.4-2-5  acting like teams actually run a traditional 2 gap 3-4 is pretty laughable. I stand by 100% of what I said; sign a damn 3T that can rush the passer.

It's not laughable when you look at the personnel those 3-4 teams put on the field compared to a 4-3 team.
