Guard in the first round?

I was big on Walker at the beginning of College football season, but i haven't heard a lot of good things about him since. I have a felling he could be had in the 3rd or 4th round. Sorta reminds me of Andrew Billings falling to us in the 4th round in 2016.

Nate, when looking at the draft a month ago, I thought we should move back in the first round and get an additional mid-second rounder. Then take Kenneth Grant in the first, Donovan Jackson or Milum in the second, use the additional second rounder to get Deone Walker, and our third rounder on Darien Porter or Mason Taylor.

But the way Darien Porter showed up at the combine, I don't know if he will make it out of the first or early second round. Taylor may go in the second as well.

But to your point, I feel that Deone Walker is the most intriguing DT in the draft. At the combine, he didn't participate in the 40 or bench and din't post great numbers in broad and vertical - which is actually good for us. He could still be there in mid second round.

I guess some don't think Deone's numbers have backed up his talent. But every time I watched him he flashed to me in a great way.

Was the best player on the field. I still think he is a mid 2nd rounder to early 3rd, we will see. Billings was my guy back in the day.

He just started playing great after he went to the Bears dang it all.

Still like the thought of trading back and taking Grant while adding a pick or two. Him not participating at the combine did not help his stock.

Yeah, I think Porter played himself out of our wheelhouse unless we trade down and just select him which I am not for yet. Mason Taylor is 
about the most intriguing TE to me in this Draft with his blood line. Son of the great Jason Taylor End of the Dolphins. Mason can block and 
catch and is maybe more well rounded than Loveland, as he is a better blocker.

Feel the same about Deone Walker, kind of liking that the Bengals have met with him. When I watched the player on the field, he has great 
hands, balance and bend for a big man, the things that matter the most in rushing the passer and he can stop the run as well.

Here's where I am...

When I look at this draft class, I see a lot of DL I like as rotational guys or maybe some who could become starters within a couple years, but I don't see hardly any stepping up and being a starter out of the gate after the 3rd round.
However, I do think there are some OGs who could start as rookies that could/should be available in Rd 3. Same with SAF.

I'm waiting to see what the Bengals do in FA this coming week, but if they don't get someone I like who can give me confidence in starting on the DL, I'm likely wanting to go DL in Rds 1 and 2, and an OG in Rd 3-4 who can either start at RG or compete with Volson at LG, depending on what they do for OL in FA.

Well this is kind of the opposite of what I thought. I thought this Draft was really deep on DL and not near as deep on OL, but with Guards 
they are different than Tackles. You can usually find a good one in the 3rd round that could start immediately. They aren't nearly as coveted 
as Tackles early. Thankfully we got Mims last season and Orlando is coming back.

Need to bring back Cody Ford but he isn't a starter. Have to add a Guard in FA at the very least, preferably 2 IMO.

It's kind of a deep DL class, but from what I see, situational guys or guys who need time to develop some in the mid and later rounds.
There's value there in getting DL in the middle rounds if you have solid starters set going into the draft.
But I'm not seeing guys in Rds 3+ who I would consider 3-down guys that could start immediately and be markedly better than 2nd-year Jenkins or Jackson.

If Bengals have a plan to start Jenkins, Jackson, and/or Murphy, I'm looking to draft 2 DL within the first two days of the draft.

The more I look at this draft year, and the more I learn about the Al Golden defense, the more I think that Nick Emmanwori is the correct pick in the 1st if he's available.

Honestly not against Emmanwori. Dude is a freak and is fast so he could play FS and Battle would be the SS.

A great Safety makes a Defense so much better but we have to have a good DL as well as it starts in the trenches.

Hope FA is concentrated on the trenches to free up an Emmanwori type pick.

We ran into this same thought process with Dax Hill though. I know I did.

Hill's speed, agility, and range made one think he should easily be able to handle FS even though he really just played SS and CB in college.

Watch any of his highlight reels, there's plenty of footage of him playing deep Safety and covering large pieces of ground in a hurry.

With the way FA is likely to go, Rd 1 likely has to go defense regardless.
Whether that's DL or DB could depend on how they address DL in FA and what their BPA big board looks like.

I'm not against Emmanwori, I just see similarities to Hill.
And I really like(d) Hill, FWIW.

True, but Dax was a great player in college. Just didn't fit FS like we thought he would. Emmanwori seems to have a wider range and 
better instincts with the added size on top of it. Also expecting Dax to be really good this year in the Slot if he can stay healthy and prove
why he was a 1st round pick and a possible All Pro talent.

When I see Emmanwori, I think of Cam Chancellor. I wouldn't be sad one bit if he is our pick at #17

I thnk he is the most pro ready. Those who think he was not a combine freak, he is not a super athlete. But is a guard who anchors well against the pass and blcoks well in tight spaces. My list of great OG's in the drafts starts with 3 tackles who may need time to learn the guard position, could start but have a learning curb.

I was really high on Savaiinaea at first. I thought he would make an excellent guard. Then he ran a sub 5 40 at the combine and he is a big boy so that is impressive and made me want him even more. So I had to dig a little more, and damn the more I watched I don’t think I want him at all. He looks great going forward but he does not look nearly as sturdy as his giant ass should pass blocking. He was only a true junior too. So I assume they told him he would be drafted fairly early.

I’m not against taking a guy who played tackle in college if they are BPA. I don’t know how much longer Orlando is around and he has a weird injury last year.
