Garrett is 29 and You're not paying an edge rusher to defend the run.

Anyone else have a link/know where it was reported?

And whilst I’m at it, has anyone a link for the comments his agent made. I seem to recall him saying when permission to seek a trade was granted something along the lines of he was confident that teams would want to offer what the Bengals were asking for.

Negotiations are messy, every team goes through it.

Watt wants an extension as well, maybe team wants to see how Steeler's handle his contract.

Yep. And there's still several months.

Team has the leverage. Trey can sit out and report after a certain amount of games, but they can franchise tag him next year.

I feel like they'll work this out. But, when agents get involved...it's hard to say how things play out. Like I feel like they could give him a raise this year then like $27 million a year for the next 2 years. So add like $10 million to his contract this year, then $27 for the next 2 years and call it a day.

He’s the same age as TJ Watt and 1 year older than Garrett. I think people are knit picking. All dude did was produce on a D that had no business being on a professional football field.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I agree the man deserves a raise and some guaranteed money.  What are they supposed to say, he’s not valuable enough to resign?

This is the issue. I get that Cincy has more leverage but if he sits 2 games and is eased into a 3rd that's a big deal for a team that has bad starts as something they're known for.  The DL is also green as well.  I like the contract example as I've been on board with something similar.  I can't expect him to have a hard stance on adding 3yrs, more likely though the hangup is a guaranteed 2nd year to an extension.  I'm guessing they want to be able to only guarantee 6-7 mil of a 3rd year and the tradeoff is a raise with all these small restructures and maybe a few cuts still.

Thanks for the update, I am aware of his age.  Do you think he’s worth the same contract Garrett got?

Yes, I think he is worth being the highest Edge in the NFL.

So you would give him the same contract Garrett got, but with a little more money?

That is what he signed for.

They are essentially trading the leading sack leader at a steal of a price, plus to rights to sign and extend for future years.

That is easily a first round pick, especially when you consider the "help" Trey had on that line...

2 years is a ton in football years. I believe the average years a NFL player plays is less than 5 years total.

Yes, a more complete DE like Watt and Garrett commands more money than a DE that is awesome rushing the passer and average setting the edge and stopping the run.

I hope they sign him to an extension, but I hope Trey and his agent accept he has financial ceiling for APY and more importantly the guaranteed portion.

I have no idea what the FO offered him, but I am not going to jump to the conclusion it was not a fair offer. As for the communication, these things can get heated. I have seen people get upset and say I am done and walk away. Either side could have done that during the Bengal's offer Trey said he received.

No inside information but my guess is they told him that if he had a great year, they would pay him top money and he had a great year but now they wanna pay him as the number five best DE and not the top DE. Now he wants 40 million.
Romo “ so impressed with Zac ...1 of the best in the NFL… they are just fundamentally sound. Taylor the best winning % in the Playoffs of current coaches. Joe Burrow” Zac is the best head coach in the NFL & that gives me a lot of confidence." Taylor led the Bengals to their first playoff win since 1990, ending the longest active drought in the four major North American sports, en and appeared in Super Bowl LVI, the first since 1988.

Yeah I think 40 million a year is reasonable for him but I also think trading him is reasonable.

$40 mil a year isn’t the same as Garrett’s contract.  Would you give Trey the same contract that Garrett got, plus a little more money?

I dont want to be rude here, but you are flat out wrong. he is not worth $40 mill a year, nor is he worth as much as Garret. I get the #s, but if you simply watch them bith you will see that MG effects the game much much more than TH....same as Watt, he is better as well.

I am pissed at Trey for a few reasons, and dont think they should go crazy on and extension, but knowing the FO of the Bengals, i bet they are botching this badly. It sounds like they are forcing Trey and his team to go public and not communicating with him at all.
That is simply not a way to do business. You let Trey and his agent know where you are, what you are willing to do, and what you arent, but then you also be as transparent as possible with a guy who the city loves.
It just sounds like a nightmare, along with the Stewart situation, hard to imagine a worse offseason for a non playoff team.

Trading him was reasonable a couple of months ago.  Now it's ride or die with him.  It's highly unlikely that they will get any kind of return that will help them in 2025.  It's 100 guaranteed that they'd lose they're only sure thing on defense.

This situation is an annoyance.  On paper the team has a big pile of leverage.  In reality, losing Trey turns an already middling-at-best defense into potentially one of the worst in the league.

All the while the clock ticks on the Burrow era.  3 seasons of no playoffs will leave a mark.  It will leave a bigger mark if we have to watch another elite offensive performace negated by laughably bad defense.

If Trey is willing to sit, he has them by the balls.
