Reds June 2025 Thread

People forget about All-Star Nick Castellanos already?
Add NC back to this team and it's definitely a boost.

And our boy Eugenio Suarez as 3B/DH? Woo boy.
That dude already has 21 HRs (5th in MLB) and there's still like 90 games left to play.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs

Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.

Castellanos was here for two years, was awful his first year here (hit .225 and had an OBP under .300, 0.0 WAR), great his second year, bounced outta town and was "replaced" by Aristides Aquino.

That's not what I would consider "consistent".

Besides he has never been even a shadow of that 2021 season again.

Suarez doing his best Mini-Me impersonation of Adam Dunn (minus the good OBP) does amuse me.

The Reds are on a 7-2 run and they need to keep it going vs. the Twins and Cardinals. Love to see them win both series because around the corner is the Yankees and Padres.

That and not to mention, the All-Star break, which typically marks the end of any positive momentum the club has going.

A 2 out no one on error turns into 4 runs. Unreal.

I don't expect Castellanos to be at .309 BA and .939 OPS like in his All Star 2021 year.
But in 3 of his 4 years in PHI, he's had >.260 BA and 3 years >.740 OPS.
I'd take that over Fraley for RF.

I'm not saying Castellanos is All Star level, but the Reds are not going to get an All Star to fill out their roster at the trade deadline.
Just not gonna happen.
They'll get someone mid-tier and call it "we tried."
I'll take any upgrade over anyone they currently put at RF and/or the constant rotation at DH right now.

Keep in mind not all ballparks are equal. In his 4 years at Philly, Castellanos has a 104 OPS+. He has been just 4% above average offensively.

Combine that with being rated very poorly defensively and he's had 1.7 WAR total in his 4 years in Philly (2 of the 4 years in negative WAR)... for $80m so far with $20m to go.

He has also hit .225/.268/.419 (.687 OPS) in 138 playoff PA for the Phillies.

He's taken a lot of PA for them so he has some counting numbers, but he's been kind of a bad player for them.

Twins are putting out a 4.40 ERA/1.38 WHIP pitcher tonight. Need to jump on him early and often.

I'll just pivot the topic so it doesn't seem like I'm all-in for Castellanos specifically.
I just want better, consistent RF.
I don't care who it is.

Same with DH.
It feels like the Reds really just rotate who fills in to hit and get an off-day in the field.
Over the past 10 games, it's been Lux x6, EDLC, Steer, and Stephenson x2.
Lux has primarily split time between LF and DH with some time at 2B, SS, and 3B this season too.
Lux is doing ok as primary DH I guess, but I'd really like more pop in that role.
Maybe I just have an outdated mindset of DH like back in the day in the AL when it was really just an older, bigger guy who you really didn't want to put out in the field anymore but still can swing the bat fine.

Looking at the Reds Top 30 prospects list right now, the cupboard seems pretty bare for OF.
None of their OF in the Top 30 list are in AAA right now. Closest is Hector Rodriguez in AA. We're probably not seeing him until 2026 or 2027 though.

Hinds is noticeably not on this list, but that might be because he's played in enough MLB games at this point where he cannot qualify to be on the prospects list.
Reds demoted him in mid-May and then signed Hampson to take his spot.
I know Hinds's BA was terrible when called up this year (.158), but he still had .726 OPS because of so much SLG.
He's about the only hope on the farm to get a call up to the Reds this season.
Looking at Hampson's stats though 8 games with Reds vs Hinds 7 games, is it really worth keeping Hampson over Hinds on the roster?

Hampson:
Plate Appearances - 19
BA - .167
OBP - .211
OPS - .433 (not a typo)
HR - 0

Hinds:
Plate Appearances - 20
BA - .158
OBP - .200
OPS - .726
HR - 2

Personally, I'd roll the dice on Hinds and let him rotate in RF with Fraley/Benson and get some opps at DH too.
Having another hammer in the lineup could really help.

With every other NL Central team rained out, the Reds pull into a 2nd place tie with the Brewers in the NL Central AND the last Wild Card spot. The Dodgers walked off the Padres with a 9th inning solo shot so the Reds and Brewers are both a half of a game out of that last WC spot.

Storm knocked power off all night, but I had my radio. I was rooting for reds batters to make outs quickly. They had the lead, but in 3rd inning the storm was coming back in per announcers. If they got the 5th inning over, Reds Win. They barely played 5 innings and game ended, Reds Win....What they did not need was a big 10 run inning, because if it doesn't go 5 innings, none of that counts. With a 4 to 2 lead, make quick outs and get in 5 innings before rain stops the game. Every time a Red got a hit I hated it. Benson thrown out stealing to end inning was a great play, get in 5 innings to make it a Reds Win when rain stopped the game. The heck with batting averages, take one for the team.

Yikes. Pitching staff took it up the wazoo today. I think I know who will be coming OUT of the rotation when Greene gets back!
