Because of the defense and Adam Jones (an All Pro returner). Not because of Tate.

At least he'd be smart enough to take a knee. He'd be almost as valuable in the receiving game too. Although Tate did have at least one nice grab I can remember last year so gotta give him props on that one

I know Hobson beats it into us that he's the all-time PR leader for us, because I don't think anyone has ever gotten more than 2-3 season in that role, but this is just comical. Oh yeah, he returned a punt for a TD against us in 2010. Gotta mention that.
We most likely could've re-signed Tate after the "dust settled" from the beginning of free agency. Oh well, Groundhog Day.
stats like that good thing we grabbed him up

That is the bottom line.
good thing he seldom gets out past 15 yard line. just take a knee deep in the end zone, at least he would give the offense about 10 more yards

you guys just need to get over yourselves and your hate of tate.
Its a good freaking signing so give it up its every year someone is crying and belly aching oh my god we resigned tate.
WithMJ and sanu hitting the market tate knows the system and is probly on a deal that makes him easy to cut if someone better is acquired.
Its a smart signing to fill roster needs before the draft. PR/KR and WR and ST gunner if need be...
if it was a 5 year deal id be upset but i bet my login here its not

and several times a game we are belly aching oh my gosh just take a knee, but it does take a special talent to bring it out 8-9 yards in and get to the 12 yard line. hey if you're happy I'm happy

12 fumbles in 5 years.. that's on 298 returns, 33 catches, and 4 carries (27.91 per fumble)
For a reference point? Jermaine Gresham had 11 fumbles in 5 years on 280 catches (25.45 per fumble), and most of those came on second/third efforts that you don't get from Tate.
Tate fumbles roughly the same rate as Jermaine Gresham with significantly less contact than Gresham. I think you really meant to use a different word than "seldom".

"Good freaking signing" and Brandon Tate will never EVER go together in a logical sense.

Love him or Hate him... Tate keeps fighting guys off.
Sooner or later one of the young guys has to do something in the preseason to knock the gate keeper out.
Cant fault the team for keeping an unspectacular but reliable guy for peanuts when half your roster WRs were question marks.

makes since, but there are bigger FA concerns.pretty sure if we had too have him and he was picked up be easy to find someone maybe a good chance anyway being better, just don't see many lining up for him like they will for our top FA. jones,Nelson iloka shouldn't they be top priority?

You have five years to pick from.
Name me one player who was given a chance to take the KR role from Tate with any seriousness.

Trust me I'm not a Tate fan but at the end of the day not one of us is around everyday to see what happens behind the scenes or in camp.
When 3 of your starting WRs are without contract it makes sense.
I suggest writing Marvin Lewis a letter wanting answers.

so you can't actually name anyone brought in to seriously compete with Tate. Okay.

There are guys that have bounced around the league that could have been signed in an attempt to unseat Tate.
Tryndon Holliday comes to mind. What happened to that guy? He was a stud returning for Denver a few years back, then fell of the face of the earth.
Granted, good returners have a small window of greatness (usually) so I'm sure Holliday is unaffective these days.

Well considering their best return man is also their best corner that hamstrings things a bit.
At the same time they always seem to be trying different guys during camp but it never pans out.
I could just assume that maybe they weren't good enough to displace our perennial #4 WR.
The Bengals seem to value their 2nd guy off the bench/Fair catch specialist.
Like I said... I'm not a coach. They are sticking to their plan.
Let's just hope someone steps up and performs this year to make it a non-factor.

Mario Alford
All got extended looks over the last 3 preseasons and that is just in the PS games; we have no idea about practices.

That's interesting that you compare a tight ends job to that of a kick returner. How many kicks did Gresham return? That's a bit like saying Tate fumbles as often as your grandma.. Compare kick returners, not tight ends to kick returners..
I'm open to the comparison of kick returners. Find the stats on them, but not tight ends vs kick returners..
Of course orange trees would all die if grown in Michigan, but we're not really comparing oranges and apples..

I should rephrase the question to be more clear, someone brought into SERIOUSLY compete with Tate...oh wait look at that, I did manage to get that right the first time.
Yeah, if a UDFA twig, Not Jordan Shipley and Mario Alford are your points....well.....
None of those 3 got serious looks. Especially Alford. Tate took damn near every PS return
