I wouldn’t let my DC go and do the same job for a divisional rival either.

Apparently we are in negotiations trying to land Austin at the moment...Per Rapoport...

This is what NFL.com said about Austin:
- Under Austin's watch, Detroit's defenses regressed over time, ranking second, 18th, 18th and 27th in yards allowed from 2014 to 2017.-

Don't like what I heard about him to be honest. Hopefully he isn't an idiot and plays to the defenses strengths. We have 5 pro bowl caliber players it should be an easy job to turn around this unit.

"Austin has coached up the Lions’ defense since 2014. During that span, Detroit has finished third, 23rd, 13th and 21st in points per game allowed. Austin’s defense has consistently been among the NFL’s best at forcing turnovers. This year, the Lions finished third in the NFL with 32 takeaways, despite playing five rookies in starting or key backup roles. That’s likely what caught Lewis’ eye as he continues to rebuild his coaching staff. Austin had a recent coaching stint with the Baltimore Ravens as their secondary coach from 2011-13, so Marvin Lewis and the Bengals have some familiarity with him. He was also defensive coordinator for the Florida Gators in 2010. Prior to that, Austin joined the Arizona Cardinals coaching staff as their defensive backs coach from 2007-09. In 2009, he helped the team reach Super Bowl XLIII, where they would lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers." https://www.cincyjungle.com/2018/1/7/16861802/bengals-closing-teryl-austin-defensive-coordinator-report-nfl-rumors

(That was one thing that became obvious Paulie G couldn't coach, as he lost Zimmer's players and started drifting away from simply copying his scheme, the turnovers plummeted.) ____________________________________________________________

So much for landing Del rio. Hope this guy has this D playing aggressive and plays the right players.

We'll see how it goes. Not upset at all.

Lions fans opinion : Quote:Y'all won't be disappointed. We've been short of talent, sure, but we haven't had any front 7 talent developed.

A Secondary whisperer? I like the sound of that. Get him working with the emerging star in WJ3 and the much improved Dennard and they could have one of the best duos in the league.

Go look at his first year in Detroit, #2 overall defense. They kept slipping year after year because each year they lost more talent each year. I prefer Fangio but I believe Austin is a good fit. He deploys more of a man based coverage scheme which is what our defense would be best at, at least imo. I think that was Guenther's main problem. He never adjusted his scheme to our players.

Meh. He's not Guenther so I'm cool with it.

Austin does not shock me. Our #32 offence beat his defence. Why Not.

The defense is Oakland is basically what held the team back the last couple years. Why does everyone act like that would be a good hire? If the guy was a defensive genius you'd think he could have worked with his D coordinator to fix it right? If we are going to knock Austin for a regressing defense why not Del Rio too?

I see what you're saying.....but he had some pretty good defenses over the years as a coordinator. That's what I'm basing it off of. By this rationale, we'd have to say Marvin wasn't a good defensive coordinator either. "Better send those refunds..." |
