Free agency is overrated because teams spend out ragious money on average players because great players like that usually never reach the open market... That's off topic though great players make great coaches though.
As others have said, coaching matters in the NFL more than in other leagues.
In baseball, managers are practically interchangeable. As long as you can fill out a lineup card and know the rules, you're good.
In basketball, there's only 5 players on the court per team, and 1 super talent can make a team win. Strategy matters some, but talent is king.
In Football, which is almost like chess with a pigskin, strategy and scheme matter a LOT. I'd say it's around 50/50 with talent. You need a good coach.
Also, you know there are great players that hit the market, pretty often actually.
What did N'Damukong Suh do for the Dolphins? Back when the Bucs were winning free agency, they signed Vincent Jackson (coming off a pro bowl) and a still-in-his-prime Darrelle Revis. They won 4 games. In 2015, the Eagles added the NFL's leading rusher (Demarco Murray), another 1000 yard rusher in Ryan Matthews, on top of Byron Maxwell and Sam Bradford. This on top of previous signings like Sproles, Malcolm Jenkins and Connor Barwin. They had a lot of talent. Went 7-9.
Sean McVay deserves a ton of credit for that turnaround.

The last time Andy Dalton went down with injury this team came closer to winning a playoff game than they have in the last quarter century and had the best playoff performance by a QB since Boomer Esiason.
Folks can make up whatever excuses they want but they cannot change those facts.

Right because it was only the QB that was the problem in those playoff games.
Folks can lay all the blame for the playoff woes on the QB all they want but they cannot change that fact.
Also, saying McCarron had the best playoff performance by a QB is debatable, but more importantly, it's misleading. You're trying to make it sound as if McCarron played well in that game when he did not.

Last time Andy had a complete offense he was an MVP candidate. I see him having a similar type of season this upcoming year. Andy is a good to very good player people want to act like 2013, 2015, and 2016 didn't happen but they did. Also he started for a team that went to 5 staright playoffs; that can't happen unless you are a good QB.

It'd be really cool if Logan Woodside panned out.

I find it funny that some people think Andy had a bad year last season or the one before. Statistically his worst season is still his rookie season.

Think Woodside is better than people think he is and could pan out.
Never thought Driskell was horrible either unlike some.
Think we are fine at QB for now. If we did not have such glaring needs elsewhere it would be different. But we had holes to fill.
Plus got to think Pittsburgh thought we would draft Rudolph the way they traded up in front of us to grab him.

We saw McCarron and dalton play with the exact same offense around them. Andy was much better than McCarron.
Those are the facts.
If McCarron had played well in the playoff game you might have some sort of point, but he didn't. He played poorly and got bailed out buy the defense, and he still lost.
the question we all have is what does this have to do with the discussion in this thread. The "McCarron was better than Andy" joke is long over. Why bring it up now?

You need to look up the definition of "excuses". I made none in my post, but thanks for playing!

McCarron had a good throw to Green on the late TD, but let's not pretend he otherwise played a great game.

And when did we score our first touchdown in that game again?? 4th Quarter. Andy was on fire that year prior to getting hurt. If he played that game, we would have won it. (nothing against AJ)

What dis cat said! I second it.
I was disappointed when Marvin was kept for dat exact reazon. It stole the possibility of getting some great offensive dude that could make Dalton and the offense great.
McVay turned around Goff who looked terrible in Yr 1.

No need for the Andy Army to get their panties in a bunch. I was simply disputing the notion that if we lose our starting QB we are through anyway and provided sound evidence. But it is entertaining to see folks "not" make excuses why a back up QB had the best game at QB and got us closer to a playoff win than any QB in the last quarter century .

What!?!?! You mean it took AJ 3 quarter to get his first playoff passing TD. Hell, Mr "On fire" has that many in 4 years.
